I voided my August 26th MCAT and have decided to retake it later and reapply next cycle.

MY Amcas is not verified now, when I withdraw my application, what else happens? Because two schools I applied to automatically sent me their primaries... do I write to these two schools saying that I withdraw my application? Or do they already know because I have withdrawn my AMCAS?

And do schools know, during my next cycle that I applied previously??

Schools will consider you a reapplicant next year, even though you withdrew your verified application this year. As for those two schools you applied to, there's really no need to contact them IMO. You'll just never be complete at those schools and your file will not get reviewed.

I am in a similar boat. I have applied this cycle but not submitted my secondaries yet (my primary is verified). I take the MCAT September 3rd, and am worried that my application is not strong enough and that my MCAT scores will not be good enough. If I were to withdraw my application now, before submitting primaries, and then apply next year or something, would I be considered a reapplicant when I apply again? Also, would that hurt my application significantly if they saw me as a reapplicant?

Yes, you will be considered a reapplicant.

I think that label hurts less since your application won't actually be reviewed. So they won't be disappointed if your application hasn't changed from last year, since they won't have seen it. However you will still be expected to come up with an answer for the "if you applied last year, what have you done to improve on your application?" question that is on a good number of secondaries. IMO, saying that you improved your MCAT a lot as well as continuing with your ECs would be good enough.

I recently withdrew my application pre-verification as well. The re-applicant status was an issue in my mind as well. So, I called AAMC/AMCAS two times to ask the same question, both times I asked for the representative to double check their answer with a supervisor.

Both times the answer was NO, you are NOT considered a re-applicant and do not need to list it as such on future applications. The schools do receive basic biographic information (which allows them to send a secondary) but nothing else (MCAT, GPA, Work...), and this is not considered a complete application.

I know people are trying to be helpful but when in doubt go directly to the source.

Good Luck

I checked student doc, for the answer to the question "when are you considered a re-applicant,". The answers from the AAMC and AMCAS representatives are as follow.

If your primary application is verified. You have applied and are considered a re-applicant in subsequent application cycles in the eyes of schools you originally applied.

If your primary is withdrawn pre-verification. You have NOT applied and will NOT be considered a re-applicant in subsequent cycles.

On a side note, I don't understand why this is a confusing point and the answers on other posts seem to be all over the place? If anyone has heard otherwise I would like to know. If so I will triple check with aamc/amcas.

FYI I withdrew my application today. It will not be counted toward re-applicant status as stated by just reading the AMCAS online statement.

A bummer, considering that I really had wanted to apply this cycle. But I just felt that without consistent MCAT scores especially in my verbal section that I wouldn't be on par for the onslaught of competition in the whole process. Oh well, I'll be back for the next cycle and take the MCAT much earlier than the summer mcat cram and apply early....

That's actually not true. Since the OP has not been verified she cannot be considered an actual applicant. He/She will NOT be considered a reapplicant for those schools next year
