Hey guys! I'm new to this whole posting thing and based on these other posts it seems I'm really behind on the application process! I am just starting my essay for the AMCAS. Do you think it is too late for me to be applying?

I'm so stumped on ideas about what to write about! 😕 I volunteered in the hospital for 3 years and had a lot of extracurriculars that weren't really related to medicine. I have a shell of an essay but I can't seem to tie anything together. I'm freaking out!

It looks like most of you have written a lot of essays by now, is there any advice that worked for you guys on your personal statement? 🙂

First of all, RELAX. Do not get intimidated by the eager SDNers here. We are here to help eachother. You are not too late. I would probably think of you as applying now at the more mainstream time. As for the personal statement ... perhaps try to pretend that you are sitting in a chair with the director of admissions at the school at your dreams. You are given 15 minutes to explain to him/her how you have arrived at the decision to go into medicine, what makes you a unique applicant, and the reasons you know that you will be successful at your training and future career as a physician. Perhaps tell yourself out loud what you would say. Then try and articulate it in writing in a cohesive essay. Once you write it, put it aside and then come back to it the next day. Re-read and revise. Re-read and revise again ... and again, and again etc... You may even want to write more than the character limit, then go back and try to condense it to make it more refined. This is just one approach. Hope this helps.

First. Let me give you some important advice.

ORDER YOUR TRANSCRIPTS NOW if you haven't already. Those will delay the processing of your application substantially.

as for the Personal Statement.

There are many threads on the Topic, you should probably try searching for them. But just think of what experiences or aspects of your life drove you to medicine. Why are you doing this? Why do you want to be a doctor? Why will you be a good doctor?

Give examples of situations that illustrate your answer. Be colorful. Try to hook the reader in and keep them interested.

This is also your time to explain any weaknesses you have.

It isn't too late, but you're not early. Try to get this turned around ASAP. But make sure you don't skimp on the quality, this is your one shot to impress in a lot of cases.

I knew it was a good idea to join this message board! Thanks for the help guys.

Actually, I ended up finding this essay editing/brainstorming service online which really helped me figure out what to write about. Has anyone else tried using one before? I just got my first draft edited by the editor there too (at first I was hesitant, but it was so much better after that 😀 , so it was totally worth it!).

I think I'll be able to turn my AMCAS in this weekend. Hehee, it was less painless than I thought 😎 . I hope I'll be up to speed with the rest of you soon. The secondary questions thread is probably going to be really useful!

ps. I used The-Writing-Center.com essay service in case anyone else is interested, there are a bunch of links to other essay services on that website too, but when I checked I think The-Writing-Center one was the best value.

Yeah, you're okay. Not early, but okay. Don't skimp on quality on that essay, and don't get discouraged. I threw out 2 previous PSs before I arrived at one I liked, and proceeded to pick it apart of course. Get that done and in, and as the previous posters said, make sure you send in your transcript today.

Other things to look out for are your Letters of Recommendation (unless you're lucky enough to have a comittee letter already done). If your prof's haven't already written them, then request it now. No, request your LORs from your profs YESTERDAY. I don't mean to freak you out, but just want to give you the heads up. Also, to give you a sense of time scale, some schools have already granted interviews, but, on the flip side some schools, :cough😀uke:cough:, haven't even officially released their secondaries. And at least you're ahead of the August MCATers.

This thread reads an awful lot like an advertisement. Clever delivery, with the initial post and all.

yea one day turn around. sounds like a classy writing service.

crimsonmama also posted a similar advertisement in the "is it too late for me to apply" thread, or at least one of them.

Would that be classiffied as "trolling?"
I still have no idea what it technically means...

i don't think it's trolling. trolling has more to do with inciting arguments or bashing others without a real cause (thin line, i know). if crimsonmama is an employee or beneficiary of this writing service, i think it may be a violation of the ToS, but not sure.

Hey, what nationality is that girl in your avatar? I am guessing fillipina?
haha half filipino, half german. good eye though. halfies pwn me.

Stop lusting after his avatar. You can lust after mine.
i think it's safe to say that my avatar and chaeymaey's avatar are the most "lusted over" (not sure if that's proper english). it has become a mission of mine to put the hottest girls in my avatar instead of anything else.

oh and for the girls, anastasis has vin diesel who is a veritable badass.
