Do you have to receive 35 credit hours before becoming a sophomore in AMCAS's book, or do you only have to attempt 35 credits?

For example, if you took 7 classes worth 5 credits each and failed them all, would you then become a sophomore for attempting 35 credits, or would you be a freshman for having received none?

PS - The example is just to clarify my question. I'm not aware of anyone who took and failed 7 classes!

I don't think you can be a sophomore without any credit hours. Your example really makes no sense. As you earn credits you move along the educational continuum.

You would still be a freshman, as you would have no credits. You have to complete those credits to go up in "rank".

You would need 35 earned credits for freshman via credit

however, if you took 40 credits as freshman via calendar and only earned 20 credits, you could still list yourself as freshman via calendar year.
What about just 30 credits for freshman? I thought that ACMAS year is 24-35 credits each, and you can use calender year or credits. Is that how it works? 35 seems like so much.

In college it doesn't really matter honestly, just take the classes you need to graduate and a few electives for curiosity sake and graduate when you have passed them all. It isn't really like high school where it matters. I had a ton of credits from high school so I was technically a senior for like 5-6 semesters.

Yeah but can you trust that guy answer in the thread?

And asking in the context of another thread makes it difficult to have a discussion. The difference between a discussion involving multiple posts by different people, and a single answer from on OP is substantial. That being said, I'm most of the way through the application so there won't be many more from me.

The numbers came from AMCAS instructions. Not sure if I interpreted what was said accurately, overlooked an alternative, or am taking the instructions too literally.

If you fail or W a class the credits don't count. Every class you take and pass counts in credits, and your AMCAS status should be done by the credit amounts indicated.
On one hand, if you have less than 24 credits or more than 35 per academic year, you should use credits.

I took and failed 7 classes! I'll be your (horrific) example.

Many moons ago, from 2009-2011, I attempted 62 credits and only received 21 (counting only those that weren't Ws or Fs).

For those few years, would I still be a freshman for AMCAS purposes?

Don't be like me. I think that goes without saying.
