I know this has been discussed before but I'm applying this cycle and got caught drinking in my dorm room freshman year and put on probation for a semester. I know this would technically count but is there really any way for them to verify it? I can't find it anywhere on my transcripts. I'm not big into the idea of lying but I'm worried that something so minor that happened 4 years ago could have a huge consequence on my application and all of the work I've put in. Any advice?

The facts: They probably can't verify, but lying is an extreme risk (kicked out of med school at any point). Several of our resident adcoms have relayed stories about inadvertent or unexpected reveals of this kind of thing. Most schools won't care about 1 alcohol problem if you're otherwise squared away.

Now prepare to be yelled at for several pages.

Yeah, I don't have any other offenses or probations of the sort. I suppose I should just be honest and explain how I learned from it. Thanks!

It might not be on your transcript but it could be on your record. You should contact the student conduct office at your school to see a copy of the record. (I'm not sure how routinely this information is released to med schools though) If it's on your record, just list it. Your incidence in particular should not be a barrier to admission. Don't sweat it.

That's the safest bet. There's never a good reason to lie on AMCAS, but it's especially silly when it's an IA that is very unlikely to really hurt you.

Just disclose it...If you present it well, and it's your first and only offence, it won't hurt you as much as you think.

I hope not. I just have this fear that they'll see it and instantly discard it since they already have so many applications to go through

I had a misdemeanor that was similar to yours. I owned up to it, presented it well, and had a good record since the incident. I got accepted on my first cycle with average stats.

This. Nobody in admissions cares about an isolated freshman alcohol violation. Just cop to it and forget about it.

Exactly. We just all feel sorry for you because the drinking age was 18 when we were in college.

We were all young and stupid once. You'll be fine.

I had this on my record except it happened sophomore year. It feels a lot worse than it actually is. Only 1/4 interviews asked me about it (happened to be the place I got waitlisted) but the other 3 who didn't ask resulted in acceptances. You'll be fine.
