Dear SDNers:

Has anyone gone through an AAMC investigation, who knows whether the reports are permanent? I had a deeply regrettable ethics violation incident which occurred almost 2 years ago, and it has haunted me ever since. I was wondering if there's any chance to redeem myself and still pursue my dreams in medicine. I think all the doors may be closed for me, but I hope the black mark won't follow me forever.... do you guys think I still have a chance in medicine?

1. Will prior AAMC investigation reports follow MCAT distribution? Even to non-AAMC schools? foreign schools?

2. Is there a period after which the record would be expunged?

3. Will the record be forwarded to National Resident Matching Program (NRPM), which is an extension of AMCAS?

Thanks so much for your help!

I have no idea, but I wish you the best. If you don't mind telling us, what happened?

Since this involves the AAMC, I figure this must be about either (a)allegations of cheating on an MCAT exam, and you're thinking about applying to med schools, or (b)an event that ended up getting you kicked out of med school and your wondering about re-applying to medical schools.

If it's (b) I would think that they explained the process, ramifications, etc very well during the expulsion process, and/or have a dean that you could now talk to. Similarly, perhaps a dean or director of admissions is a good person to talk to about applying - I know it's sometimes possible to talk to your local state school's dean for admissions about particular situations (though I don't know what your local school is).

Can you give us any more details about your situation?

Did you falsify info on a previous AMCAS app?????

Anyways, I am sure if you wanted to attend a foreign school and practice abroad there is no way they would know. However, why don't you just call AAMC and ask them what the procedure is and how long this would be on your record, it's not like it could hurt to try.

Okay, so you haven't given very much information on your situation, but it doesn't sound very good. If you've been found guilty of an AAMC investigation, I gotta believe you're pretty much f*cked. Just think of everyone else out there who hasn't been found guilty of that kind of stuff. I'm just being honest. Move on and treat as a lesson learned.
