I am filling out my AMCAS app. and am a little confused on the Letter of Evaluation/Recommendation option.

The school I attend instructs all of our LoR writers to submit letters there, they compile them and send them out to the schools that we notify them of.

So, do I just leave this option on the AMCAS blank?

My understanding is that if a med school participates in the AMCAS letters service, they generally only accept letters sent through AMCAS. Presumably what you would do is tell your school to send the letters to AMCAS, then you direct the letters from within your application.

My school does the same thing, for them, they just upload my letters onto VirtualEvals and designate AMCAS as a receiver. AMCAS then downloads the letters and forwards them to the med schools that I designated.

So in answer, enter your letters on AMCAS, assign them to schools, then tell your school to send your letters to AMCAS by giving them a letter request form downloaded from your application page.

I've been given to understand that, for most med schools, if they use AMCAS LoE, that's how they prefer to receive a major of their letters and it's the only place where they'll go to find letters (aka, they won't go on VirtualEvals or whatever and search for your letters). But if you send them a supplemental letter or something to include in your file, then most likely they won't say no either.

Don't leave the section on AMCAS blank!!!

I did the letter service at my school, but how it would work is that they would send all of my letters as a "packet" to AMCAS (then AMCAS forwards the packet to all the schools). However, I was instructed by my school's letter service to indicate "Letter Packet" on AMCAS and just write down the advisor's name, instead of listing each author of each letter individually on AMCAS. I would contact your school's letter service and ask them how you should fill out the AMCAS form (whether you should indicate "Letter Packet" or fill out the individual letters).

But yes, you need to have your school's letter service send the letters to AMCAS. Most schools only accept letters sent by AMCAS.
