Alright a did a search and couldn't find any definitive answers to this question. I would definitely consider Metabolism to be a BCPM course, however I'm not sure if AMCAS considers it to be a biology, chemistry, or non-BCPM. I could really use it for my BCPM GPA, and it was harder than a lot of my other courses that fell in to this category. What do you all think?

Other courses I'm on the fence about:
Science of Nutrition
Exercise Testing and Perscription (a RIDICULOUSLY hard class)

EDIT-

Nevermind about the last two... AMCAS explicitly lists them under HEAL. But I'm still not sure about where Metabolism fits in.

Hey I'm having those exact same questions! Metab was a hard class and organic chem was a pre-req for it so I would hope it would count as a BCPM course.

Where did you find the list that said Nutrition was a health course? Also what would Anatomy and Physiology be listed as?

Does it have a biochemistry prefix? If so, then it should be BCPM.

Click on "Help" in the right hand corner of your application screen, then click the course work section and you should be able to find the list from there. Anatomy and Physiology is considered a Biology course.

I have nothing to add, but I have a similar question..

Would all of my bioengineering classes count under biology (For BCPM)?

I have some crazy tough bioengineering classes that I am pretty sure should fit under biology, being that they have biology prereqs.

Prefix is BIEN.

aaaaaahhhh... it has the HUN prefix, which I'm pretty sure stands for "Human Nutrition." Damnit. Think I can still get away with it?

I guess the issue is whether it is taught from the perspective of molecular chemistry or if it starts with the whole food and goes from there.

Here's the Critical Mass test. What did the teacher call the enzyme that breaks down sucrose in the small intestine?

"Sucrase" = nutrition course

"Invertase" = likely a biochemistry course

"Beta-fructofuranosidase" = definitely biochemistry

pretty sure it states somewhere it's based on the content of the course and not necessarily the department it's taught in

Trudat. I'm unclear as to how AMCAS knows this, though. I'm sure they don't have time to ask the college for a syllabus in every ambiguous situation. I didn't necessarily say that having a nutrition prefix rules it out, but I would think that being taught as part of a biochemistry curriculum rules it in.

hmmmm.... while my metabolism class fails the "Sucrase Test", strangely enough my Biochemistry class failed that test as well. But looking at the material as a whole, I would have classify it as a Biochemistry course for several reasons: 1) memorization of glycolyisis, HMP shunt, Kreb's Cycle, ETC, FA Synthesis, Beta-Ox, etc; and 2) basically no material covering (maybe one lecture) covering diet/caloric intake. So if AMCAS has a problem with that, well... I don't know. I'll get a few X's.

Does anything bad happen if you get a bunch of X's?

I have listed biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, and molecular biology all under biology.
