Hey, is the amcas number the same as the aamc number given on the MCAT? I have sheets that I give to faculty when writing LORs and to correctly route the letters once they get to med schools, it asks for an amcas number. I've taken the MCAT but I haven't applied through amcas yet so I was wondering if I could just use that number. Anyone remember if their's was the same?

I wouldn't think so, but I took my MCAT a while back and it has me SS number instead of any AAMC number on it. Do you really have to get your recommendations now? I'm assuming you're applying for the class entering 2005, as you've missed every 2004 AMCAS and secondary deadline by now. Do you really need to get this taken care of so early?

I don't think this is getting them taken care of so early. I already graduated and I'd like to get them while my profs still remember me. Anyway, it's not that big of a deal.

Did you guys memorize that number? I swear I'll remember til the day I die, like my SS#....

You can use your AAMC# whenever you choose to fwd your MCAT scores via the website.
There's a loose connection.

Yes, I am positive that my AAMC ID and AMCAS ID are same. I was wondering this myself before.

I don't believe the MCAT number is the same as the AMCAS ID number needed for the LOR's.

Here is how I worked around the AMCAS ID issue.

Start by filling out the 2004 AMCAS app. Once you receive your ID number, don't submit for this year. Wait until the application for next round starts up. Sign into the 2005 application with your 2004 AMCAS username and password, and it will import your ID from 2004 over to 2005. Wallah, now you have an AMCAS ID number. Whatever you do, do not complete the 2004 app by clicking the submit button, otherwise you will have to answer the dreaded, "have you ever applied to medical school before question?", with a YES.

Hope that helps. Proceed with caution, this worked for me with the last year, it does not mean it will work well for others in following years.

No need to memorize it. After you finish filling out applications the schools go by your SS number too. None of the schools I've called so far have minded that I gave them my SS number instead. As for Texas applicants who applied out of state this also means having two numbers to remember.

seriously. I feel like a cow branded with my AMCAS #

Thanks for all the responses. I called my LOR collection service and it sounds like I can just put it on a cover sheet once I get it and not worry about having it on each LOR. That would be nice. I could always do SS#, but after meeting someone who was an identity theft victim, I've gotten paranoid about how many places I give this number. What if my prof lost my sheet or just threw it in the recycle? So I e-mailed amcas and they're not necessarily the same. I went to amcas to see about registering and those that registered before May 5, 2003 may have to re-register and since I was after that date it sounds like my number will be the same.
