Quick Question: Does anyone know exactly what time AMCAS opens for submission? I know the day is the 1st of June, but I haven't been able to find the exact time.

I looked at the @amcasinfo premed calendar from twitter and they seem to have a listed time of 12:00 GMT but this is not consistent with the times that applications have been submitted in previous years it seems. So, I was thinking that the 12:00 GMT time listed is just a placeholder and not the true time. Any ideas?

Wasn't it on 4/20? Or am I confusing it with something else...

May 2, 2017 -- AMCAS Application Opens for Data Entry
June 1, 2017 -- AMCAS Application Opens for Submission
June 30, 2017 -- AMCAS Begins Application Transmission to schools

AMCAS isn't transmitted to medical schools until the end of June so it doesn't matter if you're verified June 1st or June 21

Thx Yorick - that's helpful to know. 🙂

Last year it was 9:30am EST. I know because I was a noobie at the time and thought my app was behind when I submitted at 9:32am. 😉

I always advise that applicants do not submit at the opening minute or the opening day for that matter. In the 16 years that AMCAS has had online applications, 14 have had opening days issues.

When do you recommend submission?

A couple-three days., the reality is if you submit between June 1st and July 15th, you would have no discernible effect on your chances
You had mentioned in another thread that one could submit the primary with only one school chosen just to get the app verified. After loading more schools in, how long do you think it takes those new schools to receive your app?

Should be practically instantaneous assuming you're already verified.

Why not start verifying in may and transmitting on a rolling basis?

How is that any different than starting verifying in June and transmitting on a rolling basis in late June? You arent going to enter med school till the following year anyway. Whats the difference?

@gonnif --I'm curious though:

Say Med School XYZ gets 5,000 applications.

In what order do they appear on the hypothetical list?? Like, which is the first application they look at? Is it the person who submitted first, or got verified first, or finished their secondary first, or just has the highest MCAT or surname beginning with A or what?

I'd like a "behind the scenes" at the admissions office. I'm purely curious....

Thanks again gonnif for all the insights and clairty.

The answer is yes. All of these and others. I am sure that is wholly unsatisfying so read below and it will be even less so

-when both your primary AMCAS application and all your transcripts have been received , you first enter the verification queue.
-When verification processing is complete, your application is then assigned to schools and transmitted on June 30 and after
-In these assignment/transmission files that are sent to schools your application is in the order in which they got there, which between verification and processing into assignment files is wholly unpredictable
-the applications then get these transmitted once a day and get electronically filed. How the schools then first look at these files, send secondaries, in what order varies significantly as each school may have configured their software to prioritize on different factors, how pre-screen/initial screen/early screen is done at each school, the level of formality for this step, and other things.
-Typically EDP, High achievers, URM, family of alumni, feeder schools, associated UG programs, linked postbaccs, and other factor may push an app forward in the process. But how those are flagged and done varies widely.

Wow - so a lot of variety, kind of makes sense I wasn't sure if AMCAS imposed a certain order, now I know.
