Hi, I'm actually an Australian here, starting med school in January at the University of Queensland. I was just lurking but I actually know of a program which may be quite helpful to the OP without all the "you're ruining your life bull****".

Basically from what I understand you do your first two years in Australia, during which you can see your lady all you like (provided she's in the region - a lot of Americans don't realise how big Australia actually is :/). In those two years I guess you guys will figure out if you really will make it long term without having to sacrifice your US medical future. Your last two (clinical years) are in New Orleans at Oschner medical school. They say 100% of the cohort gained US residency places, so the first two years in Australia don't stop you from practicing in the US.
It might be harder to get an Australian internship if you decide you want to stay in Australia after the first two years, but having done half your degree in Australia will definitely improve your chances. It is designed for US citizens (I actually wish I could do this program!) so they've got very similar financial aid and stuff that you guys do over there.
It's obviously not perfect, but I guess it's kind of a compromise between your relationship and future career. There might be similar programs in other states; I can only speak for my uni. Also, Australia is pretty awesome so I don't know why you wouldn't want to study here!
