Well having a Canadian citizenship helps (to some degree)

In Canada, we dont have 2nd year boards. The canadian boards are at end of med school (after you have matched). USMLE or COMLEX might make a tiny difference but most likely it wont mean anything.

For you to match in Canada as a US medical graduate you want....

1) To have rotated at the hospital you want to do your residency
2) ** Have great Reference letters from doctors in Canadian hospitals
3) Have a decent resume (this is my person struggle lol i dont know how people in med school have time for extra curricular stuff other than exercising, etc)

So basically they need to know you. Its not a must, but your reputation goes A LOT further in Canada than the US (which relies on boards, as well as reference letters)

What year are you in?

I'm pretty sure if you're not a Canadian citizen or resident, you're considered an IMG applicant.

You can still apply as an IMG, but you don't get any first round picks I believe. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 90% sure that unless you're a Canadian/Canadian resident, doesn't matter that you graduated from the US, you're still going to be an IMG 🙁

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. As long as you went to an ACGME accredited medical school (basically any in the US or Canada), you are eligible to enter into the first round match and not considered an IMG. Senior members of the board can further clarify though.

For the millionth time:

You MUST be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to apply to a Canadian residency through CaRMS.

IMGs are Canadians who attended medical school outside Canada / US.

Correct.

US MD and US DO medical graduates are considered Canadian Medical Graduates as far as residency applications goes. It states in on the CaRMs website (if you go to provincial requirements/eligibility) that we will apply to the CMG stream along with Canadians who went to Canadian medical schools.

We are VERY fortunate we dont get placed in the "IMG" category with caribbean, australian etc

US MD, yes.

US DO grads are only eligible to match (first round) to Ontario and BC. They may apply as IMGs to Alberta in the second round only, and in the remaining provinces are not eligible to apply at all.

oh ya this is true about US DO. I just have no intentions of practicing in anywhere other than BC or Ontario. I was raised in Calgary....but personally not where I want to live when im older
