After bombing my 2nd attempt at the DAT due to a nervous breakdown on my part on test day (I never knew my mind was capable of such weakness... 🙁 ), I've been considering what to do for the temporary, immediate future. I know dentistry is IT for me and my future, but many times, I feel like I have not accomplished much at all in life.

I am considering volunteering the next year or so for AmeriCorps, working directly with improving the quality of lives of the American Indian elderly. I think this will be a good experience for me and I am not worried about skipping the next year or so of taking additional classes to improve my application. I also am not worried about whether this will affect me adversely in the application process. I figure I would work for AmeriCorps, possibly take a class or two through corresondence/distance-learning and then retake the DAT (for the 3rd f'n time! 😡 ) once I have finished AmeriCorps.

So I was wondering if anyone here has joined and finished a tour of duty with AmeriCorps. If so, how did it affect you, as far as personal growth? Did it change your outlook on life? Thanks and best of luck to those in the process of D-school apps. 😀

How are you studying for your DAT? Have you tried Kaplan or Barrons? From what I have gathered they should be very helpful.

I did Kaplan for my 1st attempt. For the 2nd, I read Kaplan inside-out, Schaum's and TopScore. My scores from the first are listed below in my sig.

And my disappointment with my 2nd try was not a matter of lack of studying. I just fell apart during the exam. I blame myself.

So I am looking for opinions on AmeriCorps and its positive effect on those who joined. Thanks.

--If you think 20/19/20 DAT scores are bad enough to retake them, your crazy. if you thought you could do better, thats fine...but i hope you dont think your 1st attempt scores are going to keep you out of dental school. Those scores will get you into the majority of schools.

Yeah but it depends on the GPA

I'm interested in AmeriCorps, is it the same thing as working for the US Health Service? I asked them for an application a long time ago...never got one...I'm thinking its probably poorly organized and ran. I'd be interested in doing it to pay back dental debts I will have in the future...do you know how AmeriCorps goes about doing this if at all? Just curious...

Fill out the online application. You can choose where you would like to volunteer. Good luck.

Your DAT scores are good. Why did you even retake the exam? Just apply to the schools. People with only 18 AA get into dental schools.
Take care,
Rich

I've already applied. I'm patiently, desperately waiting on that UOP interview invite (#1 choice), although I'm not sure how that's going to happen. But thanks for the kind words. Best of luck to yourself, you f'n pimp rockin those sick scores. 😀
