I've seen a good deal of this in undergrad. Is amphetamine use prevelant/a problem at your dental school? Do some students find it almost necessary? Would you consider this cheating? Would a student be dismissed if caught using Adderal, Ritalin, etc for studying?

There's no way the school could prove anything without HIPAA-protected medical records.

Its pretty much all over med schools, dental schools and used by many professional scientists. Nobody used the stuff when I was in undergrad so I just sort of shake my head but many people seem to see absolutely nothing wrong with taking it as a study aid.

where do they even get it? if its from a physician then its not the schools concern, however other sources....

I would be willing to bet that the school could order a drug test for the student considering they are practicing in the school clinic. Now if the student has a prescription for it then the school couldn't do anything about it as long as the medication wasn't adversly affecting the patient's treatment.

Some use others pills, some buy it, some have legit scrpits and some dupe the MD into a prescription.

Many many articles in news and journals on this phenomenon.

I know, but I thought getting the view of actual students on SDN might be interesting compared to NY Times writers.

Several people in my class use amphetamines, some prescribed and some not, to study longer hours with more focus. These people get some serious personality defects and have some physical problems from using too much for too long. However, their grades are better than average.

I'm not convinced this is cheating-they still need to study and learn material to do well on tests. If it is cheating, schools will not be able to find out easily or do anything about it.
