is AMSA really worth the money? I just got this invitation and I am wondering if it will be good.

UF Premed AMSA is dedicated to supporting premedical students in their journey to become physicians. We offer unique volunteering opportunities, hands on medical experiences, peer advising, and more. Committees such as Health Outreach, Arts in Medicine, and Women in Medicine allow members to express themselves, impact their community, and interact in many areas of medicine. The Equal Access Clinic, serving Gainesville's homeless and indigent population, is solely run and supported by the UF premed and medical AMSA chapters. Members have the unique experience of completing all patient intake and gaining first hand medical experience.

can someone give me some opinions? thank you!

Our AMSA is about as useful as a nail in the foot but I have heard good stories of AMSA success in schools that have med schools. It is something that I will re-examine when I get into med schools to help out Pre-meds and younger med students and seek help myself.

I don't think it is that useful unless you have all the levels of medical student available to you.

I did find the medical school surveys to be helpful when picking out which medical schools to apply to. However I wish more medical students/graduates would fill out the survey as some schools only have a few responses.

It really depends on the school and your directors. I'm an officer in my schools chapter (the premed portion) and we're really active. Last year we did a fundraising concert for operation smile, a std awareness project, and ran a campus health fair. Not to mention we worked a lot with our med chapter, NIH, and got to know a ton of people around our med school.

The best thing is to attend a few meetings and get a sense of what your schools chapter is like. If it's a active one I'd say join. I wouldn't pay for the national membership unless you want to go to national convention, however, because the local chapters don't really care and it seems like a waste of 75 dollars.

so does that mean medical schools don't really care about joining AMSA as long as I do volunteer work, research, etc on my own?

...being in AMSA is not a golden ticket to medical school. It's no different than any other EC(s) that offer(s) the same opportunities.
