Hey guys. Right now I am currently starting 9th grade in highschool. I have gotten a 3.86 gpa in middle school but plan to raise it to a 4.0 all throughout highschool. I really have a great interest in medicine and am hoping to be an anesthesiologist however i have a few questions.

1. what grades should i have throughout highschool to get into a pretty good pre med school.

2. how does the grading on the mcat work and what is a good score?

3. how long do you have do you have to spend studying in med school.- I figured if i really focus and study every moment I can in med school, with getting 7 hours of sleep i can actually survive. Would this work?

4. How tough is residency compared to actual med school?

5. what happens if i screw up in pre med school and i cant get into a med school? Would i have to choose a different carreer? or How can i continue my education of an anesthesiologist.

thats all the questions I have. help is much apreciated. Thanks!

The top med schools set a strict cutoff of a 3.9 middle school gpa. No big deal; plenty of average medical schools set their cutoff at 3.75 so you are ok.

1) Sometimes the best premed school is the one that isn't the best and the hardest. You'll get higher grades, and combined with a good mcat score, you'll be fine.

2) It used to be scores of 10 or more on each section was a good score. They've changed the test so many times, I'm not sure if that's still in effect.

3) You have a good work ethic. You'll be fine. Don't forget to smell the roses once in a while.

4) A lot of medical schools protect you from abuse. Internships don't. A brutal internship would be the worst 12 months of your life. Even a "cushy" internship will be the worst 12 months of your life. Choose wisely.

5) Can't be an anesthesiologist without a doctor degree of some kind (MD, DO, MD from some island paradise, etc), but then you get to qualify for AA school and realize how lucky you were not to get into medical school. They can pull around 90-100 an hour without medical school and residency that takes an average of 14.5 years off of your life (there's no study behind that number. I just estimated it out of thin air).

Hahaha... thats hilarious. But seriously kid its cool that you re so interested at such a young age, but you got a long way to go and you re too young to be worried about things like residency. Have fun while you can and always keep up with your studies is the best advice I could give you.👍

The best thing you can do now is -

1) Do well in high school. You don't have to be perfect. No one on earth will ever again care about anything you did or didn't do in high school more than 6 seconds after some university admits you.

2) Go to an inexpensive but solid public university and do very well there, regardless of what field you end up choosing.

3) Avoid incurring large educational debts. With few exceptions, expensive private colleges really don't offer much that cheap state schools don't. This is especially true when it comes to medicine ... no residency program or doctor will ask what college you went to. We just don't care.

Closing thread. This really is not an appropriate forum for this kind of request. Try the HS or premed forum if you need more info.

You have gotten some pretty good responses so far.

Concentrate on making good grades and having some fun.
