HELP!

How would an Australian (me) go about applying to study osteopathic medicine in the US?

Our University system looks to be so different to the American one that we may as well speak a different language (and sometimes do).

I have a BSc in biology, am able to bore my friends stupid with a better-than-average knowledge of manual medicine, have taken advanced first-aid training and worked as a volunteer first-aider with Australian Red Cross, am a pretty good massage therapist(albeit with no formal qualifications... but I've never killed anyone... a few paraplegics maybe...), have seens osteos and chiros since I was sixteen (32 years young now), was homeless on and off for several years (feel a little uncomfortable capitalising on one's darker period... but hey... it's made me the well-rounded bleeding-heart I am today), work for a national not-for-profit environmental organisation, am incredibly passionate about (some would say obsessed with) manual medicine and medicine generally, hike, swim, used to work for a Senator, have hung out with nurses, doctors, chiros, osteos, naturopaths, etc., am mature (well, OK, mostly), frequently help old ladies across the road, blah, blah, blah.

I'm especially interested in manual medicine, and have spent a good part of my free time reading up on the osteopathic, chiropractic, physical medicine literature... hell, I'm even trying to write a book on the subject!

OK, so I'm a freak. But do you think I've got what it takes?

Now, I wouldn't mind at all studying osteopathy in Australia, in fact (quite frankly) I think I'd get better training in OMM here... but you guys get to be medical doctors with bells on!!! Hospital access, full medical licensure, etc. ...plus OMM and a holistic bent. You have no idea how lucky you are!!! (Although Australian medical folks don't recognise or even know much about you! But hey, I'm a professional lobbyist... I can change that in a jiffy.)

I wrote to AACOM, told them my situation and... they were bugger all help.

I need lessons from scratch guys... so please help... I mean, for starters, how on Earth would I find US$25K a year in tuition fees alone???

I'm hoping to travel to the US next year on a fact-finding mission for my book... any tips?

Thanks in advance...

hey aussie, most medical students take out loans from fed. government or private lenders. If you can somehow obtain a resident status (green card) then you are eligible for loans. As a foreign student I am not sure how to go about the tuition money, unless you can find a sponsor of some sort (not for profit organizations, loan repayment and etc) but definitely find a way to utilize your potential. good luck to you

From NHSC website:

You Are Eligible to Apply if You

Are a U.S. citizen

hey aussie
The whole international thing is tough. I can give you some information of an advisor to speak with that I know personally and who is good at giving this kind of advice. I'll be in Australia at the end of January 🙂

Anyway, with the whold 25K a year... we have financial aid and being in debt won't be so bad 🙂

well.. my e-mail is [email protected] if you want some more information on who to talk to.
