Don't flame me, this is an honest question. It might come off as me being a troll but hey, life sucks..

Basically, I am a battle rapper. I have a tens of thousands of views on youtube so I am slightly known... the problem is this

Would this hinder my med school chances. I mean battle rapping is a constant "I hope you die", "You're gay". blah blah blah.. If these videos fell into med school hands do you think they would see this is as unacceptable or as a sport and i could explain how im not really homophobic etc.

i would totally wanna interview you (if you were qualified academically as well, ofcourse). but thats just me. maybe ask LizzyM or something

look up ken jeong on youtube click on one of his stand-up gigs and you will find your answer.

Seems risky to me. A good number of your interviewers and adcomm members are likely to be fairly conservative and won't want their school to be represented by someone expressing such sentiments.

Yeah, I don't want to sound closed-minded or anything because personally I think rap battles are awesome, but if those videos show up when you google your name, you might have a problem. If you apply to med school, you might have to take down the videos. 🙁

On the other hand, if you put it on your app maybe your interviewer would ask you to demonstrate. That's happened before with people who play piano and sing and such.

why not just temporarily take em down?

the only question is: do you use your real name on youtube? is your name connected so if you google "psharma02" you get a vid saying you're gay and such?

i write and have been published in a number of magazines that are both online and in print. most of my pieces are boader-line inappropriate. after the first publication i realized i needed to start using a pen name. just don't use your name. if you change the youtube vid/anything else online that has your name and is not professional NOW and you plan on applying in june it SHOULD be gone from the top listings of google by then.

1) You could challenge them to a rap battle for admissions.

2) "I hope you die.. You're gay?" Your rap is terrible!!1

I hope you're not H-bomb, cause Only One really fused him together....

Okay that didn't make any sense...crap

LOL, I took them down just in case but a new one will be up in February. I expect SDN support on the youtube comments! 😀

New one will be up next month.

Anyways, do you guys think the majority would get offended?

As others have said, these people are a conservative bunch looking for PROFESSIONALISM. Unfortunately, rap battling isn't really demonstrative of professionalism, so my guess is that it would not be the best idea to leave this up.

I don't even think it has to do with conservatism. I think that there are plenty of young liberals out there who would look at that hobby as being a little out of character for a med-school applicant.

It's one thing to be gay and be worried about conservatives. Being gay doesn't really say anything about a person except that they like people of the same sex. But rap-battling shows enjoyment of, well, putting people down in pretty outrageous, insulting ways, in front of a crowd, for fun. It doesn't really show the sort of humble, caring attitude that most doctors are expected to have (regardless of whether or not they actually have it).

It's impressive, but to conservatives and non-conservatives alike, it's still going to send the wrong message.

I see... I was hoping to find a way to spin it positive for them.. ah well. It'll always be inappropriate to them I guess. I'll just do it as a pastime and leave no evidence.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I mean, you could say on your apps that you're a musician but then an interviewer would probably ask "what kind" and you'd say "rap" and you might get an interviewer who would say "rap isn't music" and that's kind of a conversation-ender, right there.

Yeah..or you may get an opportunity to stand up for something you believe in...a real plus. 👍

Don't really see that happening. In my opinion, it'd be a conversation opener. It would be a unique thing about you, and if I were the interviewer, I would want to hear more about it.

But you're not the interviewer. You're just some guy on SDN.

I'll just leave this here

I thought that was exactly the attitude doctors were supposed to have.

Couldn't disagree more. Its who you are, its something you enjoy. What does full contact fighting on my app say about me? Didn't send the wrong message to my accepted schools. I mean we could all spin something in a negative light, fighting shows enjoyment of, well, putting people down (literally) in a pretty violent, insulting way, for fun. It shows an interest in hurting and injuring others and a violent disposition that is exactly opposite of what is needed in stressful situations physicians find themselves in.

oooooorrrrrrrrr

We could listen to an individual's personal reasons and learn something about them. I think the stigma of conservative, constipated interviewers is absolutely false. Ok, not absolutely, but more than is played up. If you get a d-bag interviewer just put him down in an outrageous and insulting way. 😀

I see where you're coming from but while rap battling is difficult, it does involve some vulgarities. I mean it's all about homophobia, racism, and colorism lol... It is all about putting the other person down and I dont know how I can flip that to the positive side... In the end, i'd have to say I don't mean anything I say lol

No, it won't hurt and may help your admissions chances. By now, even the blandest of suburbanite professionals have seen 8 Mile 🙂

Seriously, just make sure your whole application looks good, and anything you do to set yourself apart will probably just look interesting and refreshing to the ADCOMs who are bored to tears trying to differentiate between applicants' stats!

It would only affect your chances if you truly mean to kill someone or if you act out on whatever you're rapping about (killing them, stealing their money, having sex with their mama, etc.).

I think it's great and I would definitely mention in my interview that I'm a rapper and I have tens of thousands of views on my YouTube page. Of course, I'd prepare a rap or two in case they want to hear me perform! That would definitely make me stand out!

Coolest EC ever. Having said that, I wouldn't broadcast it while applying simply because you never know how people are going to view things. It's best to just be conservative until it is all said and done!!

If this is an important hobby, definitely mention it. You can discuss the type of wordplay and quick thinking that are crucial to success in freestyle rapping, but I would take any videos down that are both easily linked to your real name and inappropriate in content. Homophobia and/or violence are not what an adcom wants to see.

When this comes up, you'll probably encounter responses ranging from completely indifferent to extremely receptive, depending particularly on the age of the interviewer. You can gauge the likely response based on the preceding discussion and then go from there. If you were one of my interviewees, I'd ask you to freestyle on the spot at the end of the interview.

lol. Yeah dude. Keep that under wraps.

Med schools are so traditional man, they like proper old school. Once you are in then start free styling in class and they will love you (some at least!)

hey psharma02, your rap about fatty acids is pretty sick!! http://www.youtube.com/user/psharma02#p/a/u/2/hlt4c97A3Zw
👍

Man, this reminds me of that Pussycat Doll song, "When I grow up." Sounds like it's pretty tough to get unfamous after you're already famous haha. Not that I listen to Pussycat Dolls... my younger sister made me listen to it. seriously, she tied me down and everything. I wouldln't listen to it voluntarily. because I'm a manly man.
