Dear colleauges :
I'm An IMG, I have a specilaty qualification in general surgery from an Egyptian University. I wanted to know If there is any chance for me to apply for american board certification or examination in general surgery.
Is it applicable ?
Can a specialist IMG obtain American Board without taking residency in USA and practicing in USA?

Thanks

The American Board of Surgery does not offer reciprocity with certification in other countries. Surgeons who have completed all or some of their surgical training outside the U.S. and wish to become certified by the American Board of Surgery must first enroll and complete training in an accredited U.S. or Canadian general surgery residency.

What you said.

The only time I've seen this bypassed is for surgeons who complete a fellowship at an institution and then stay on at that institution as faculty. Even that is rare, but I have seen it happen (at two institutions, both in the transplant department).

Yep, sorry...there are few shortcuts to ABS certification.

To become Board Eligible, you must be enrolled in a US general surgery residency. You MAY get credit for time trained in non-US programs (max 2 years as I recall) but you must be enrolled in a US program before you even apply for the credit.

As noted above, there are rare exceptions, generally for fellowship trained surgeons.

I guess I should clarify my statement; I don't think they are board certified, they are just allowed to practice in the United States at academic institutions.

Is the reverse also true? Would the Egyptian board of surgery recognize a board certification from the United States?
