i've posted a few times, but thought i'd post a little intro here.
i'm 29, married, and a mom of 3. my husband is in the military and my oldest son lives with his dad, because none of us wanted him getting moved around everywhere (we all get along great). i mostly put off schooling to stay home with my kids, but this is my third semester back in full time and i'm completing my AS in math and science. i start at UNF in january and am tentatively planning a BS in chemistry (it's been awhile since i was in chemistry, so we'll see how much i enjoy it while doing the prereqs i don't have yet).
my husband gets out in 2 years, which means i won't have quite enough time to finish my BS at UNF. when he gets out, we will go wherever he gets a job (only considering cities with med schools). then i'll finish my undergrad, which will probably take another year, since most schools require you attend for a year to receive an undergrad with them.
the best part? i will have one med school to apply to. we'll be dependent on whatever job my husband has to support our family, and we don't want to move again once we're out of the navy (we really don't want to jerk our kids around, which is a big part of why we're getting out before the younger two start school), so i'll apply to whichever med school is in the area we're living in, and that's my one shot.
i think this will work out. we're looking at places/schools like ETSU, MCG, and tampa, so it's not like my one shot will be johns hopkins or something 😉 and the good thing about putting off school till i'm old is that my GPA rocks. i only screwed up my first quarter when i was 17. and i've always been good at standardized tests, so hopefully that will serve me well on the MCAT.
i'm also really hopeful that it will work in my favor to apply to one school ED and tell them they are my only choice, they are where i will plan to stay for my residency, and that area is the one in which i will serve when i finally begin practicing. if nothing else, it'll certainly be cheaper...
my biggest fear has been that going to med school will screw my kids out of having a mom. i have a wonderfully supportive and involved husband, so that helps, and it's been really reassuring to read posts by other parents who are doing this.
anyway, i've rambled enough. just wanted to say hello and thank all of you for contributing your experiences. it's been helpful and encouraging reading 🙂
