So a funny thing is happening to me...

I am in a program with essentially a mandatory two year research commitment (academic plans). When I started all this, I thought gee, I love doing research (having spent a few years in the lab already). But now, having operated a little more than when I applied to residency, seen a little more, I realized something.... I f***ing love operating. I love big open long messy abdominal cases: mesenteric bypass, portal shunts, transplants, whipples, biliary reconstruction, hepatectomy....

Now all of the sudden going to the lab is depressing me... I want to operate, to get better, I NEED to get better. Any way to find a 'mini-fellowship' of just operating while 'in the lab'? No running a service, no MM, no distractions. Can I find someone in private practice to take me on? Take transplant call? Or maybe just get residency over and find a fellowship / senior partner... Ideas?

Impressive work for a "medical student." (You can change that under "my account" and then "edit my details" BTW.)

Go into the lab and moonlight a lot. Take trauma call and transplant call. You'll get to operate a lot that way.
