I was looking at the MPH threads but I still couldnt find a solution to my situation.

I just graduated with BSDH, RDH degree in May 2009. I was a bio/predent major before I transferred to the Dental Hygiene School. I have 4 more prereq classes left( biochem, orgo2, physics1 and physics 2 ) for D school, I am taking Biochem and Physics1 Fall 2009.

However, ive been wanting to take MPH, Global Health Concentration for the longest time, and it is a 1 year program that will start in Spring 2010.
I have not taken DAT yet, and I will still have 2 more prereq classes ( orgo 2 and physics 2) to take for D school, which i can probably break up in 2 semester if I decide to do MPH ( which consist of 15 credit per semester )

My question is..do you guys think it is doable to do both at the same time? or should I take the MPH first and finish and then apply to D school?
I know I will need a lot of preparation to take the DAT, and MPH Program wouldnt be easy either..I wonder if anyone has been through the same situation?

Also, I understand that most school want you to finish your MPH first before starting with D school, correct?

Any input is appreciated 🙂

Thanks

I think you should do the MPH - you can always do the last 2 prereqs after you finish MPH in the spring of '10 and apply that summer - orgo 2 and phys 2 usually are spring semester classes anyways.

If you want to be a dentist, I'd just finish the prereq's and spend the rest of your time studying for the DAT and go to dental school. If you get into ASDOH, you can get your MPH through them while you are in school.

Do you have to take 15 credit hours in the MPH program? I know in the MPH program I was in, 9 hours was considered full time. If that's the case with your school, take 9 hours of MPH and 6 hours of pre reqs for the next two semesters. MPH classes are not difficult, just time consuming.

Thank you for all the input, you guys.
I wanted to do MPH for so long, and in a way it might increase the chance of me getting into dental school, thats why i was thinking of doing it before D school. The only concern is that preparing for dental school, taking DAT, etc in addition with MPH classes might be too much to handle, but at the same time I dont wanna to wait another year to apply to dental school because of MPH. Gotta make my decision.

Any other input???

Do you have input from an Adcom or Director of Admissions that an MPH will in fact increase your chances of getting in? If your science gpa is good, then just study hard for the DAT and don't worry about the MPH, you can always go back and get your MPH (there were plenty of health professionals in my MPH classes).

yea thats the thing, my GPA couldve been better, and I thought having a Master degree would increase my chance..and with that degree at least I have something to fall back on in case I dont get in to D school..aside from the fact that ive been wanting to do it.

Thanks for the input. I guess Ill just decide when if I actually get in to the program, if I dont, Ill know what to do. If i do, then ill have some decision making to do. I'll let the admission staff decide my faith 🙂
