Anatomy courses

I know that an anatomy course is highly recommended by many dental schools but I was wondering if I need to take a *whole year of anatomy (anatomy 101,102, and 103) or is anatomy 101 enough to fulfill that "recommended requirement"?

I only took a semester of Anatomy (It was Anatomy 124 at my school) in undergrad and I just got an A in Gross as a D1 so I can tell you for a fact you don't need to take an entire year!

Trust me. As a D1 who is currently taking Anatomy, take as much as you can in undergrad...there are 3 people in my class who failed Anatomy last year and you cannot remediate Anatomy, so they are now in Anatomy again and have a whole extra year until they graduate.

Also good advice Irishmom! Although different schools have different remediation options...everyone in my class passed this year but last year two students failed, one was asked to leave school and the other was able to remediate and stay with the class of 2018.

@Pro-Dentite19 and @irishmom, I never took Anatomy in undergrad. Do you think your taking Anatomy in undergrad helped you prepare (in terms of familiarity/foundation/depth) for Anatomy (Gross and Dental) in D1?

One thing Anatomy in undergrad prepped me for was cadaver work. You will dissect a cadaver in Dental School...at least the head and neck part. If you have never seen a dead body it may shock some people. Also, they scope of Dental School Anatomy is soo much more than undergrad. Undergrad did give me a starting off point. I think I would have one much worse if I hadn't of had that as a reference.

Hi MRZ8,

I don't think my Anatomy course prepared me at all to be honest. Irishmom sounds like her class was probably a 300 or 400 level course since it had a cadaver, and I agree with her that working on a cadaver would be very beneficial. My class had its practicals on diagrams and hanging skeletons so it was much too easy to identify structures.

What prepared me the most was making flashcards from a Netter's Anatomy Atlas the summer before classes started, especially the skull structures.

Take anatomy because it is awesome and super cool / interesting. The D school bonus is just the cherry on top
