If you interview at a program that offers both advanced and categorical positions are you supposed to rank both of those positions? I am trying to understand if that is the norm and does that substantially increase my chances of matching at a certain program? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Yes you can rank:

1. random categorical program
2. Same program but advanced track

however, not every program has both advanced and categorical spots.

And each program has a separate rank list for each. So they can rank you for one, both, or neither.

In any case, ranking a program that hasn't ranked you can't possibly hurt you in the match -- it will just skip over that one and try for the next, it would be the same if you hadn't ranked that program at all. So feel free to rank both and no harm can come of it (as long as you would want either spot!)
