UTSouthwestern, Tenesma, or others,
I am a research fellow in a competitive specialty that I thought I was more interested in than I am (rads, rads onc, or derm). I have tons of research in the competitive specialty to list on my application for ERAS but am worried this may hurt me in anesthesia. I don't want anesthesia programs to think that I am applying to them as a second choice (especially since anesthesia has moved up on my list). Unfortunately you cannot submit different CAF (Common Application Forms) to different programs. What do you think?

Fiend (interesting handle), I would encourage you to apply and contact the programs you apply to, to explain your situation. You would certainly stand a great chance to get into anesthesiology if you are competitive for rads and derm. I would advise you to revise your personal statement and assign the new one to the anesthesiology programs.

No harm in applying to different specialties, whether or not you intend one or the other to be a backup specialty. It's your future and you need to do what's best for you, and that includes getting as many looks as you can from the programs you are interested in.

I doubt any program would turn you away. PM me if you have any other questions.
