I’ve always wondered how many anesthesiologists/CRNA's are also hobby musicians. I’ve met quite a few and I wonder if it’s higher than the average population.

Well, for those of you who appreciate a music performance, check this out. This kid is on fire. Danny Carey is one of the best drummers to ever walk the earth. This padawan does a fantastic reproduction.... more like Jedi Master.

If you don’t have the patience to listen to 6 minuets of this gifted individual, start listening at 4:00 minutes. 😱:horns:

There are several active musicians in my program. Two of us residents are cellists, one of the interns is a violist, two attendings are violinists..there are a couple of other residents that play guitar, I know an attending who sang professionally...and we're all pretty active as time permits.

Ive noticed quite a high percentage of pre-meds in various university orchestras Ive been exposed to. I think musical performance is a genre of the arts that particularly resonates with medical minds because its artistic, but requires a lot of discipline and structure like science in general does. On the flipside I have always been horrible at painting, drawing, poetry etc. I feel like those artistic areas require more innate talent that you either have or you dont🙄

Sevo,

I play drums and piano. Going to listen to that drummer now. Do you play?
I'm lucky enough to have one of the busiest touring/session drummers in world as my best friend, so I've hopped on a couple kits for sound check and played with some cool bands!!!! (a real highlight for me!)

Have you seen this Tony Royster video? 2 mins long. Dude is insane.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehmTBsmZhmY

Not my cup of tea exactly, but impeccably tight. As far as speed and chops, I don't think anyone can top him nowadays. Not even Weckl or Gadd. Buddy Rich however was and always MIGHT be, the best. Have you seen the solo he did on Jerry Lewis' show? It's on youtube, INSANE.

I'm a huge Chester Tompson and Phil Collins fan along with Chambers, Beauford and of course my friend who toured with Ringo (imagine that gig!), Smashmouth, Dave Stewart, Five for Fighting and tons of other bands over last 2-3 years.

I play piano and also sing in a choir. My mom is a pianist and was teaching piano in the conservatory for 40 years, therefore I had to play it ))))

I can listen to different music, but prefer classical one.

I know what that is like. My parents force fed me piano for many, many years. Retrospectively, it's probably one of the best things my parents ever did for me. Now I love it and served as a great scaffolding for music in general.

Dr. 712, that dude is sick. I would love to do that on the drums. It's always super nice to have a friend in a band. Not only can you get on sweet rigs, but you have someone to bounce off ideas.. 👍

I've also been in ton's of different bands during my life, so I have had a lot of exposure to different instruments. Along side piano, I started playing this at around 6 y/o while we lived in South America:

At 12 y/o my parents moved back to the States and, one very good Christmas, Santa brought me the best gift ever... a guitar. Since then, I've learned bass, a little bit of drums (wanna get better) and a variety of different wind instruments. I spend most of my time on the guitar, but I also do a fair amount of recording... thus far my drum tracks have been on a roland drum machine.

I'm looking into getting my first electric drum kit (the only way I could bring a drum set into the house is if I had a way to put on headphones when I used it.... wife's rule 😍).

Roland TD-20k

It is more than what I want to spend... but I've been on a couple of these at GC and really liked them. Really want to keep it under 2.5K though. Wacha think?

My biggest fan.... 😀

Sevo,

That's a nice electronic kit, really killer, go for it, it's all you need. Get a comfy seat and you'll be cruising. My first days drumming were on the old Simmons electric drums (think Invisible Touch by Genesis). My friends' kit is killer, $20K I think, and that's without hardware. As a Yamaha endorsee, you make a phone call for the gig, and anywhere in the world, PLOP, you get a kit sent to the stage per your specs. I'm picking up a Yamaha electric kit for my son this month. I'm getting it at cost, GC Yamaha deal through buddy. 500$. Not exactly what you have there, but for the little guy, it's all he needs. 😀

I'm going to try to get some photos up...

Great shot of your home studio... make sure that kick pedal comes with that set...

Haha, no. But he's about as busy and can certainly play all that stuff Carter plays. That's my friend in the photo of
the studio...tongue out and all.

Not sure if this link will work, but here's my friend during soundcheck with 2 other members of Five For Fighting. I asked for a little Police, and despite friendo and I waking up about 7 minutes on the tour bus before this was taken...well, you be the judge... : ) (again, improptu soundcheck f-ing around, NOTHING at all like I've seen him play when he really rips it out.) I'm behind cam on this one...

Note: hand held vid cam, really sensitive, expensive little toy, will never distort. Even standing a foot from drum kit for example. Anyway, for whatever reason, the audio isn't playing on the video as clearly as I have it in the hi-res version...

Nice D712. Thanks for sharing. Your buddy rocks it. I see your son was rocking it as well- that was the best part of the video. 😀 :horns:

thanks! he and his brother needed to be removed from the kit or they'd have still been sitting there, fighting over sticks, during the show.

I don't have the guts to post a video of me playing during check... HA!

best comment on the video:

"You look like the kid who tortures toys from toy story 1"

:laugh::laugh:

My mom also taught piano my whole life (up until I was in my late 20s, anyway). Worst decision of my life was to have her teach me. I dropped it after about 5 years - if I would have been with somebody else, I'm pretty sure I would have stuck with it. Now I'm just trying to find a way to get back into it (with having a family, one income, and no free time b/c of school).

Cool videos, though. Thanks to all for posting!

Big fan of music and especially drumming. Former drummer myself and plan on buying some Roland V drums once I have a job. Danny Carey is certainly one of my favorites. I am also a fan of Josh Freese (Michael Jackson, A Perfect Circle).

Here is a vid from a NIN tour. Not a fan of NIN but definitely of his snare work and energy.

The cymbals on the new V are killer:

V-Cymbal Ride with natural cymbal inertia, simultaneous 3-way-triggering (edge, bow, bell), and positional sensing.

V-Cymbal Crash with natural cymbal inertia and choke capabilities and dual-positional sensing (edge and bow)

😉

NIN: I'm a big fan of anything off of "Pretty Hate Machine" Thereafter, isolated tunes from different albums.

Danny C is da bomb! At around 4 min... it gets real interesting.... 😀 This was like 4 mo. ago....

I've always used music as a means to blow off steam. I play guitar for the most part, bass, a little bit of piano, and now trying to learn the drums on an electric kit that my wife bought me a couple of years ago (it's taking that long!). I've played in bands since high school through college and even in medical school, just messing around with doing covers. It really NEVER gets old. And I am all for learning a new instrument. I even did a weekend Jam Camp with Jon Gindick to learn how to play the harmonica.

Now in my CA-1, I really don't have much time to get together with friends for jam sessions, however, I have been playing around with recording with a basic setup: guitars, bass, drums, condenser mic and an Alesis multimix.

I was a music major and former pro drummer.
Not sure yet if I'm going into gas.
I have about 9 more months to figure that part out.

I have a roland vdrum kit, that is great for f'ing around, but it's no where near as good as playing a real kit.

Agreed, and I plan to switch from headphones and electric to acoustic
the minute I have a soundproof studio in the backyard... 😀

I guess you guys must be good at playing "Classical Gas".

For you percussionists, thought this was pretty cool...
