Hi,

I'm a MD student at a Top 25 program in NYC. I'm top 25% in my class and have done well in my clerkships. However, my Step 1 is weak (around the national mean) and inconsistent with the rest of my record. What do you think are my chances of getting into a good university based anesthesia program in the NE or NYC. Please give advice

thanks

Average (mean) USMLE, american grad MD and average - subaverage grades will get you interviews at many top programs this year...if you apply NOW. Can't guarantee it later.

Btw, after talking to a dept chair, it's not the 3-digit score that matters, but the mysterious 2-digit number. At least that's how the programs look at you. I'm guessing they base competitiveness of their class based on the 2-digit USMLE scores or something.

If you're gonna apply send whatever you have by eras - now! (don't worry of LORs aren't in)

thanks for the info. What's the rationale for saying that people with my credentials are getting many interviews "this year" Is there something different? what do you think?

I find it funny that people post these sort of questions over and over and over and over again----and nobody ever bothers to use the "search" function to see previous replies!!!! Jeez....... 🙄

1) There are multiple threads that address this year's average anesthesia chances/interview requirement stats.

2) By "THIS YEAR" I mean that there is annual variability in Anesthesia match. Match of 2002 had a surprising spike in applications. As a result programs have given out too many interviews early on, and couldn't interview some of their most competitive applicants.

Match 2003 has shown to be similar in level of competitiveness, with a small increase in applicant numbers. Programs were apparently cautious and conservative about their interview offers.

The reason I say t"his year", is because everything we write here is speculation on a current trend. There is really no way to predict the competitive reality of Match 2004. I'm happy because I'm getting interviews I wasn't sure I could get. So, it's nice to gauge your chances, but if you're serious about it, you should apply asap.

3) I also think competitiveness differ regionally. Many people migrate to New York because of the area, which makes programs there slightly more competitive. Less seem to be attracted to Baltimore or Philly. So don't just look at overall program stats, geography matters.
