Yes Cuts, I did match at UCSF🙂 So did another classmate of mine in Internal Medicine. We even placed another anesthesia grad at Mass General. My nickname is "offshore" for two reasons. First, those are the best wind conditions for surfing, something I've been doing all my life. Second, I also go to an M.D. school in the 50th state, the best location in U.S.A. for that pastime. I'll be doing my transitional year here as well. But I'm still just as amazed and happy as anyone else!
Awesome job on match to everyone! I'm heading to NW for all four years which I'm very stoked about
, but my first choice was to learn how to surf the next couple of years...very envious of you offshore 😎 . Late.

Congrats to all. I matched at U penn, my number two choice. I'm actually relieved because I'd put JHU number one, and then realized I really wanted Penn. Oh well, all's well that end's well...for all of us. Congrats to all...hey offshore, did I meet you at the UCSD interview...I only met one guy from the interview trail that was from Hawaii, and his name was Patrick. If you are him, congratulations...and that goes to all.

sillyputtyglue,
Two of my classmates at MCW are going to NW for anesthesia. Their both pretty cool guys, so if the rest of your class is like them, you will have fun as well as learn.

Hey Brownman, yes we did meet at UCSD. That was a fun one. I had an incredibly difficult time trying to decide between UCSD and UCSF. UCSD's program director is one of the coolest guys I've met, and it seemed like they had the most relaxed and collegial department of any place in California. To be honest, I think that UCSD is incredible. For a moderately sized program, they have an amazing number of top-notch faculty. The funny thing is, at least half of their full-time faculty trained at UCSF. In the end, I ranked them 2nd because I thought UCSF would better serve an academic career if I ended up taking that pathway. But a piece of me will always love SD. Anyway, many congradulations on U of Penn. What a program. I didn't travel to the East Coast but I definitely know about their reputation and faculty. Keep in touch via e-mail. I'd love to hear more about that place.
Hey all...been casually lurking and reading the anesthesia activity for some time. Congrats to those who matched and thanks to everyone who offered their input. I'm headed to MGH in 2003 and am very psyched/anxious. I had a great time on the interview trail, and really came close to choosing other places...but the part of me that feels like it might end up in academia won out. That and I love Boston. If only I could have the cost of living of Duke or Mayo, and the atmosphere of Boston or San Francisco...

Yep, NW stands for Northwestern. The program there is great, definitely not spoken in the same light as the bigwigs like Hopkins, MGH,B+W, UCSF, and the like, but the PD's everywhere gave it huge props due to the energetic PD, Dr. Stock, and the fact that they have lots of money to spend. They emphasized their regional, but to be honest I don't think regional is used too often in private practice...anyone else have thoughts on that? Regardless, the location is stellar, right smack in the heart of the magnificent mile in a great city. As far as having fun, it's good to hear that there will be fellow partiers in the class...I mean fellow hardcore study buddies.
Damn it rad, I think I'm going to go home and cry and try to scramble into somewhere else now. Oh well, at least the "local" area is pretty cool. Remind me that the bar tab is on you if I ever see you out in chicago. 😀

•I hear NW anesthesia is not even regional, it mostly has a local reputation. 🙁•••••I find this thread absolutely entertaining.
Northwestern, until it's implosion about five years ago, was, if not the top, one of the top midwestern programs for a number of years. Unfortunately, it's still struggling to win back that reputation, but given their recent strong recruitment strides and the recent state of affairs at the University of Chicago program, it looks like they're coming back strong.

Several top program directors believe Northwestern is on its way to the top again. James Eckenhoff made the program one of the strongest in the 70's/80's/early 90s. The department has gone through a complete change. The clinical experience seems incredible, with a dedicated PEDS and OB hospitals and outstanding facilities thourghout. Regional was already mentioned. I was very impressed during my interview and wanted other's take on the program. Great Chicago location too.

The only thing going for the University of Chicago program seemed to be research. I actually also liked the Rush program as well, surprisingly enough.

I think all of the programs listed so far, including Northwestern, are excellent.. we should all feel fortunate. Academic anesthesiologists I have spoken to generally seem to stratify the outstanding programs into 3 tiers...
1) Best of the best: JHU, MGH, UCSF
2) Considered to be Elite programs: Alabama, Brigham, Columbia, Duke, Mayo, Michigan, Penn, Stanford, Wake Forest, U. Washington
3) Other excellent academic programs: Beth Israel, Cornell, Dartmouth, MC Wisconsin, Mt. Sinai, Northwestern, Penn State, UC Irvine, UCLA, UCSD, U. Chicago, U. Colorado, U. Florida, U. Iowa, UNC Chapel Hill, U. Pittsburgh, U. Rochester, U. Texas Galveston, Utah, UVA, Vanderbilt, Wash U, Yale
I think trying to rank the excellent programs from 1-50 is fruitless. If you apply yourself at any of the above programs, you will have great fellowship and job opportunities.

Hi guys,
I'm really happy everybody got into some really GOOD programs!! It is great to see the the field itself is getting better and better with such good young minds.
I wrote a post several months back trying to rate programs and after it is all said and done I have to TOTALLY agree with Yogi. It was SO DUMB of me to try to rank programs in an order (1-50). Guess, u only learn these things after making the stupid comments!!
I do like how Yogi clustered the programs.
Sorry again for such comments I made in the past and am glad to hear everyone did great in this yrs. match!!
Thanks especially to Yogi for such good eval. on different programs!!

I also like how Yogi clustered the programs. It fits with what I have heard.
I'll be going to UAB. Very happy to be going there. Great caseload, GREAT perks.
Congrats to everyone. It'll be interesting to see how competitive next year's match will be.
6 weeks to graduation..."I have a dream.."

Anyone else going to Colorado? I know that they took 6 of their own students, two Creighton grads (myself and a classmate), one from Medical College of Wisconsin and 3 others that I haven't heard about. Just wondering if any of my future fellow residents visit the board. Congrats to all on a successful match!
I think Emory is a great program. Every resident I spoke to (about 10) were extremely happy. One of the best programs I interviewed at, and one of the few places where each interviewer knew my application. I would have ranked them number one if it were closer to the Northeast (with friends and family). Otherwise, awesome caseload and clinical experience that is top notch. Plus Atlanta is pretty sweet.
goodkid, from what i've heard, emory has a better academic reputation and caseload than the cleveland clinic or baylor. cleveland clinic has arguably the best cardiovascular case exposure in the country, but other than that most academics seem lukewarm about their program. don't know much about baylor.
nodiggity as for the texas heart institute, it is affiliated with the UT-houston residency program, not baylor's.
