Hi. I am a psychology student.
But, I have an anesthesia question...questions.
My two year old son is scheduled for eye surgery in a week to correct strabismus.
The surgery is estimated to take about an hour.
The problems or my fears are due to my son's medical history:
Did not eat solid foods until two years old.
Dx: Autism Spectrum Disorder
Possible mitochondrial disorder
Possible celiacs
Has been anemic
Dx: Diabetes Type I
Food allergies: Casein (milk), gluten (wheat), eggs, soy, peanuts
As a baby...stopped breathing twice
Asthma
digestive concerns
Just given a sweat test for a type of cystic fibrosis (awaiting the results)
His father had complications with surgery a few years ago in which he stopped breathing.
His three year old cousin died a year ago following a near drowning. He was resuscitated at the scene and was awake and alert on trip to ER. Parents were told that there were no concerns and that he would be fine. He died within a week of "brain swelling." His death is still being investigated. He was autism spectrum. Parents have had concerns about him being anesthesized to be intubated and dying (brain death) shortly thereafter.
My questions are:
I understand that anesthesia can trigger seizure disorders, especially in spectrum children. Is this true? and what is the likelihood?
One of the side-effects of anesthesia is death. Why? What is the likelihood?
What are the safest pre-op sedatives and anesthetics for children? Why?
Would it be safe to anesthesize a child with the above conditions? We have been cleared by the endocrinologist, his DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) doctor, pediatrician, and the anesthesiologist, but I still have fears.
Do the benefits outweigh the risks?
