I have a question that I hope some of you may be able to help me out with. I'll be a first year DO student this fall in Southern California and am starting to think about summer research fellowships between first and second year. I know the Foundation for Anesthesiology Education and Research supports summer programs all around - specifically Cornell and NYU last year.

Anyway, I was thinking about setting up a summer research fellowship somewhere in NYC and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations/thoughts on any programs in the city (Mt. Sinai, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, etc). I'm currently thinking that a residency in NYC might be fun and interesting, and therefore want to get my foot in the door, so that when it comes time to apply for residency, i might have a leg up.

Also, (this may stir some debate) but what programs are more DO-friendly in NYC? As this may factor in to where I do a summer research project.

If anyone has any suggestions or can clue me into any experiences good/bad they had doing this, please let me know. I'm all ears. Thanks for all your help.

A little history: I did pulmonary/critical care research for three years in Northern California prior to starting school again. I've got a good amount of experience (2 published papers, and a half-dozen abstracts)

Check out the FAER grant program, it is for people in your position. I have no idea about the particulars, but I am sure others will. They can help you to set up a mentor too, although I am not sure how picky you can be locationwise if you just take one of their volunteer mentors.

There was a discussion about this here not too long ago. Try searching FAER or use the ASA site.

I think it is 8 weeks total with 6 research, and 2 clinical, but I have no idea about the particulars or if that is right, but I am sure others will. PM me if you want to know the details about the FAER fellowship, as I am currently in it. I was kind of similar to you in that I'm from the SE and go to school in the SE, but want to do residency in Cali...I'm doing my research this summer via the FAER at UCSF in hopes that it'll show some initiative to get out here when it comes time to apply.

IME, there's 3 options for research.

FAER is good but seems to be getting competitive. I think it pays X amount per week for as long as your summer lasts and guarantees clinical exposure and pays for a presentation at a meeting etc.

Your school probably has research grants available, and might pay you to do research wherever (not necessarily home institution) provided you have a PI etc.

The school/hospital/dept where you want to do research might have "summer externships" for med students which may or may not be researchy. Pitt has a notable one last time I checked.

I'm doing the FAER program too. It's from 8-12 weeks and they give you $400 per week plus money to go to the national ASA meeting in October and a student ASA membership. The expectation is that you work for 40 hours per week including shadowing. You're supposed to spend like six hours a week shadowing, and you have to give a presentation about your work and fill out some survey at the end. Here's the link if anyone wants to read about it to apply for 2008. It's pretty easy to apply. You just have to fill out a form, get two LORs (one from your med school dean) and send them a CV. Oh, and you can't apply for it if you're in your last year of med school, but it's no problem if you're in your first year.
