Anesthesia Research

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering how important is it to do research in anesthesia before applying to anesthesia residencies as opposed to doing research in something else?

I've heard from past and recent 4th years that research is not all that important, period. I.e. ppl get into good residencies with no research at all. Obviously some research is better, and research in anesthesiology is probably even better.

Even though anesthesiology has gotten more competitive it is not derm or ENT where research in the field is basically required to get in.

At the research-heavy programs it may be more important (or required) but this is what I've been told for the field overall.

I am nowhere close to applying for residency, so I have no idea how important research experience is. But if you want to try anesthesia research and you're a med student, you can apply for a FAER fellowship. You do anesthesia research and work with anesthesiologists in the OR, and you get paid too. Here's the link that explains all about it. http://faer.org/medicalstudents.php?section=Overview
