I have a one month anesthesia elective (my 2nd one). What can I expect? What will be my reponsibilities? (pre-op and post-op checklists?) I probably won't know a lot. Will I get to do procedures (intubations, lines) and get ACLS practice? Maybe it's good because I have it right before surgery so I can get familiar with how things work in the OR. Any advice?

Ask people at your school for specifics. I just got done with a week of anesthesia and the main things we were supposed to do was learn to start IV's, learn to bag the patient, and learn to intubate. We also had to interview a patient in the pain clinic.

Currently on my (first) anesthesia rotation/sub-i.

I do all IVs and intubations. Hoping to get some A-line practice soon.

I'm not really responsible for anything, I just work with a resident and do as much as I can to keep things moving.

Tell them what you want to do.

All I did was intubate all day. I would leave the room and go on to the next patients. I told them I was interested in ER and only was doing the rotation do get good at intubating.

Just tell them what you want to get out of it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I probably shouldn't have taken it so early in my 3rd year. 🙄 Oh well. I would like to get efficient at starting IVs and lines. And try intubations. It sounds fairly low key. Has any ambitious student been allowed to try a central line? I remember when I worked in a hospital a 4th year doing a sub-i did central lines and I was impressed.

Yeah, I did central lines in my anesthesia rotation. If you want to do IV's, you will have to ask the nurses in pre-op, because they are the ones that do them. I'm sure they will be more than happy to let you do their job for them.
