Hey what's up everyone,

I’m a current M3 planning on going into anesthesiology. Trying to start getting an idea of where I should apply and looking for some advice on schools to consider. Here are some stats:

Unranked Midwest MD School
Step 1 239
Grades- Pass M1/M2, Pass M3 so far (3rd year is Pass/Fail as well, no honors, high pass, etc)
Class Rank- Top 15%
Strong EC's- Leadership in class, community service and mission trips, highly involved in teaching M1/M2 students, medical education research
Strong LOR’s from anesthesia department chair, IM, ICU, and EM

Don't really know where to start program wise. Would like to go to either coasts and big cities. Any advice on good programs to apply to would be greatly appreciated!

You'll have no problem matching. Apply to a bunch of mid tier and top tier programs (assuming no geographic restriction), and you should get interviews at most places. Now, what are "mid tier" and "top tier" programs? That's up to debate, but I'm sure your anesthesiology attendings at your program can give you some guidance. Once you get the interview, you're half way there... In my estimation, solid midwest programs (where I am from and where I trained) include the likes of University of Chicago, Northwestern, University of Michigan, etc. There are some real hidden gems in the Midwest-remember, the Midwest is generally not a desirable region to live in, as compared to other regions in the US, which is why a lot of these programs have a difficult time recruiting.

You’ll have no trouble matching at a solid mid tier program. Upper tier perhaps within reasonable reach as well, especially in Midwest as alluded to by the poster above me. Aim for a good Step 2 score and you’re golden.

Talk with your home program about specific places to target, that would likely be the most helpful to you. Connections between academic colleagues matter for this sort of stuff, especially at the higher level programs.

Apply to any program you're interested in. With AOA you could definitely end up at a powerhouse, but you'll end up at a great program with the application you already have.

I'd recommend applying to 20-25 institutions. You do NOT need to "apply broadly" with this application; you're well positioned. Good luck.

ETA: agree with Blade below re: regional application. I only applied to 22 programs but realistically could STILL have applied to fewer. I just wasn't being honest with myself about my enthusiasm/ability to live in some of these places.

Pick your REGION then apply. It can be quite expensive to interview at 15 programs across the entire USA. Why not focus on 1 or 2 regions at most then sort out your application list of 15-20 programs? That list can include 6-7 solid midtier programs in it which should guarantee you a match.

I'm not stating that you can't interview across the entire country but rather that many Med Students do have a preference for a particular location.
