Animal bites

Hmm, worst on the job bite was when I got bit by this crazy old coot of a cat. I was restraining for the vet while she examined her and until this point she was super sweet, purring, licking, etc. As soon as the vet touched her behind for the rectal, she somehow got loose from my grip and chomped on my hand. Had to go to the ER after work and get a tetanus shot.

Worst bite ever was when I was 7 years old and got bit by my neighbor's spaniel through the fence. Huge gash on the heel of my palm, 3 stitches. It ended up getting infected and I developed blood poisoning. Hospital stay was 3 and a half days. I was scheduled for surgery to remove some tissue, but thankfully the day I was supposed to go in my hand was miraculously better. I like to think it was the 4 gallons of ginger ale that I had the day/night before surgery was scheduled.

Other than that, I've gotten bitten by hamsters, mice, and horses (the one I used to own took a chunk of skin out of my upper arm and I have a lovely red scar from it).

I was attacked by a cockatoo with a prolapsed cloaca when I worked at a bird vet clinic. I opened its cage door and it literally attacked my hand and wouldn't release its grip. I had to shake the bird off of my attacked hand and then she latched onto my other hand. The most painful bites I have ever experienced!!! The parrot would not release again, so I had to shake her loose, which seemed to take forever. Finally she fell to the floor and went running after me. I literally was being chased around the clinic by this mad featherless cockatoo for about five minutes who was screaming at the top of its lungs or air sacs and aggressively charging me!!!! Talk about embarrassing... people were peering out of the waiting room and seeing me running for my life from an enraged featherless cockatoo with its crest standing up (the only feathers I think it had)I have never been so afraid of an animal in my life!!!! I finally was able to escape and grabbed a towel so that my bleeding hands could restrain the bird and return it to its cage...I actually felt sorry for the animal and have mixed feelings about keeping birds in captivity. However, I ended up adopting an African grey from that clinic and has been the best companion I have ever had!!!😀

I was checking to see if my horse needed her teeth floated and all of a sudden she crunched down on my index finger... she about took the side of my finger off and I almost fainted- although I can stand seeing gruesome animal surgeries and wounds, I can't stand the sight of my own bloody injuries :scared:

Me too! I cut myself with a scalpel (long story) and needed 5 stitches. I about passed out looking at my own blood. Had to put my head between my knees and sit on the floor! Eek!

I get scratched more often that anyone I know or work with. I have a scar on my hand from a Rabies Clinic that our Dr. was spearheading. Silly little chihuahua had such short legs that even when I was restraining him, he could move his feet and made me bleed!

I have another scratch on my forearm from a little Corgi mix. Same situation- short little legs couldn't be restrained enough and drew major blood. These scars are nasty and have not faded in the slightest!

Exotic vet I was working for had me hold a small bird... um- I've never doe that before. OUCH! I didn't want to hold him too tight around the neck, but I should have. He definitely made a mark when he bit down.

I basically should have a *Caution* sign on my back. I accidentally stick myself, hit my head off of cages, etc! *sigh*

The worst bite I ever got was from a 5 year old girl. She always considered my husband (then fiance) her special friend because they shared the same birthday. She came over to give me what I thought was a hug, but instead she bit me in the crotch! She drew blood and I had a very nasty bruise for quite some time. Shocked the ***out of me, major embarrassment, and painful too!

Oh man, this made me laugh so hard...!

:wtf:

I got no sympathy....my fiance almost fell over laughing and my sisters also only laughed. The kid's mom was pseudo-horrified but I think laughing inside also. After all, it was pretty funny but I am still a little scared of little kids.

And then people think we are crazy for not wanting to be people doctors.....Just pull this story out, 'nough said.

I've never been terribly injured, nothing that some gauze and Polysporin couldn't fix. Been bitten by cats endless times (volunteering at a cat shelter for 3 years haha..) and snapped at by a stranger-wary dog at a vet clinic. Luckily, I managed to pull away my hand so he only grazed/scraped the skin off the top of my hand rather than clamping down on it.

There was a particularly bad pointer that managed to bite the doctor through an e-collar, he was able to wrap his mouth around her arm and puncture it really bad.

I have a bond on my front tooth where a dog who had just gotten spayed and was still loopy jumped up to bite my face and chipped off the bottom of my tooth.

One time I jumped to avoid a bite while vaccinating a dog and managed to pin two of my fingers together, the needle went all the way through one, and into the other.

What are you vaccinated for? I vaccinated myself for Lyme's Disease once, doing pretty much the same thing!

I almost got microchipped. The dog jumped, the needle went through the dog's skin, and through most of one side of my finger. The owner freaked out when she saw the blood because she thought her dog was hurt. When I showed her that half of the skin of my finger was hanging off she seemed relieved. That poor doctor couldn't live it down lol

I had a cat bite me on my hand, and then I let go from being startled at which point it went gator on my hand and wrapped itself around it with all claws digging in and the teeth just repeatedly biting all over. Wasn't pleasant.

I got revenge though. Shook the ****er off and kind of entered into a trance, immediately scruffed him again and pressed down on his back end so he wasn't going any where (yes I know often this can exacerbate the situation with cats but it's all that was going through my mind at the moment). Granted I'm bleeding at this point, the owners are staring in shock, and the vet is yelling for a towel from another tech, but I wasn't letting that damn cat go anywhere.

Best compliment I've ever got was after wards, soaking my hand in a bowl of betadyne, vet came in and went "I thought the cat was going to win for a bit but damn, you kicked its ass in the end!"

Ha ha! Distemper I believe it was. Weren't you surprised how easily that needle went through your finger?

My coworker once stabbed me with the needle that we had drawn a dog's blood with for a wisdom panel. I always wondered if he had weird results showing he was part polish and part german. No one ever said anything lol

That reminds me of a story, a vet I worked with submitted a piece of bologna to the lab while in school, it came back as an "interesting mixture of (insert various animals here, I can't remember what he said) cells"

Ive been bitten by dogs, cats, mice, rats, hamsters, rats, a hedgehog, and nibbled at by a bunch of ducks I was feeding at a park when I was younger--scared me for life, my Dad has a picture of me surrounded by ducks with my eyes wide open and a some bread held above my head.

The funniest bite (to me) was in AP biology where one of the mice we were had bred (to figure out the coat colors of their parents) clamped on to the webbing between my thumb and pointer finger. The whole class- including the teacher- was freaking out but I was more worried that the 2 week old mouse had just fallen from my hand to the ground and people were running around.

The two dumbest, most preventable ones were from one of my rats- who I know is a big fatty and loves food. I went to kiss him after eating and he latched on to my lip. Didnt break skin but it hurt like hell and was swollen for a while. The other was from a semi-wild hedgehog my Dad rescued from his ex-employer (she left it loose, along with a mother cat and three kittens in her house when she moved-got the cats adopted but no one would take the hedgehog so it fell on me the "animal person" in the family). I had gotten bitten by it a lot, but never badly, while trying to tame it, but one day my sister wanted to hold it but also wanted to be assured that the bites didnt hurt THAT much. So I stuck my hand in the cage to show her they werent bad and he latched on to my index finger harder then he ever had before. Didnt break skin (surprisingly) but I was sitting there pretending it didnt hurt while he held on for a good couple of seconds. Didnt let my sister hold it after though.

Kind of a different spin on the animal bites story, but I was about 4 hours into classes today when I realized that the back of one of the legs of my jeans had been chewed into a dozen holes by one of my rabbits... So I had to walk around with holey jeans all day 🙄

Well, I got bitten today by a kitty. She was very unhappy and I was just trying to get her out of her carrier. Anyway, I scrubbed and bandaged it but everything I've read says that you should just always go to the doctor for cat bites. Agree/Disagree? I'm trying to decide if I should run by urgent care tomorrow or not.

I avoid doctors at all costs, but that might just be me. The safest thing to do (if your insurance covers it) would be to run by U/C, they might give you some amoxi or something for a quicker healing process.

Other than that, keep it clean, keep it scrubbed. Don't use ointments, they always "clog" the little hole and trap stuff inside and make it worse.
After the first day or two, I tend to not bandage and just let the air at it. If its bad or not healing, my doctor has me take some antibiotics, but she knows me and my history quite well and doesnt make me come see her.

And that's as far as my professional, anti-MD opinion can take you. Feel better!

When I got bitten by a cat, I did everything possible to keep it clean and prevent swelling, infection, etc. I scrubbed that sucker so well haha. It still got sooo swollen. I'm pretty sure there is nothing you can do to prevent that, and its pretty necessary to get on some meds

I would get onto some abx... when I got bit by a cat I was not going to get on abx (I was just filling in for 1 day and not technically "employed" anymore so I felt bad) but after I went to UC the doc told me 50-60% of cat bites will get infected and if it is by a joint the odds of it getting infected even on abx is closer to 80-90% so I would get abx; better safe than sorry.

That's true. I have such a hard time convincing myself to see a doctor, I'm a "wait and see" kind of person. It's not a bad bite, it's bruised but not really swollen or red. I make a decision in the morning I guess.

Yeah...I'd go. Long ago (when I was young and dumb) I had a wicked infection from a bite. Because I was young and dumb, it took a long time to heal and I was damn lucky that it did without any permanent damage. (for the record - not saying you're young or dumb, just that I was and that's the only excuse I have for not having had it seen).

It was painful and really worrisome, and I definitely think it's worth it to get some antibiotics to make sure in this case. Too much can go wrong.

Good Luck!! When I got bit, same way you did, my finger swelled 2x its normal size, turned bright red and bruised and it was a small bite (I tend to bruise and swell easily). I could not use that finger normally for a couple of weeks. I hope your bite heals quickly!! :xf:

When I was 12 I got my first hickey - from my neighbor's quaker parrot. Was hanging out on my shoulder like he always did several times a week and I was talking with my mom and neighbor and he decided to chomp down on my neck. My mom and neighbor didn't notice, but I sure handed the parrot back to its owner really quickly and never wanted to hold it again, lol. I had a triangle-shaped bruised on the side of my neck for about 2 weeks.

My first cat bite was a couple years ago - from my own cat. I had him scruffed and was putting him rear-first into his carrier and he twisted around, sunk his back claws into my other arm, and bit my hand eight times. At which point I dropped him, grabbed a towel and wrestled the angry man to the ground and into his carrier. It got super swollen and painful after 2 days and I had to go on doxy.

I've been bitten by foals several times before, had them nibbling on my clothes while I clean the stall or feed the mom and then they decide to see if I'm edible. (Stupid me...)
My coworker brought her aggressive min pin/heeler rescue mix to work and did not put a 'caution' or 'will bite' sticker on his kennel, nor did she warn anyone. Told us he needed socialization and to give him cookies. So I gave him a cookie, sensed his was all tensed up, so I didn't stare at him at all, and right as I dropped the cookie through the bar, he chomped on my fingers, thankfully he only drew a little blood.

I also stabbed myself with a needle while aiming for the bag of saline solution (my hand-eye coordination has improved in then...)
I had a lot of horse/dog/cat close calls, and I've had more bits than I can count from rodents (siberian hamsters are the devil.)

Ha ha! Distemper I believe it was. Weren't you surprised how easily that needle went through your finger?
I wasn't the one who did this, but it did happen to a fellow tech at our clinic right behind my back.

She was talking to a client, had slammed her hand down on the table in front of her (part of emoting/emphasis on a story she was telling), and then kept talking. The client finally goes "Uhhhh...you...don't feel that? At all?" She then looked at her hand and she had a needle going clean through part of the webbing: deep, towards the knuckle. She went "Oh my god, excuse me!" and ran out. She said she never even felt it go through, but now feels better about giving shots to animals lol.

It still got sooo swollen. I'm pretty sure there is nothing you can do to prevent that, and its pretty necessary to get on some meds
I soaked my hand in salt water for 15 minutes, then 45 minutes off, and repeated for the rest of the night (bout 3 hours I reckon) til I went to sleep. Had no swelling the next morning.

You sound just about as bad as me! haha 😀

What are you vaccinated for? I vaccinated myself for Lyme's Disease once, doing pretty much the same thing!

I haven't vaccinated myself yet. But I did jab myself with sleepaway. I was drawing up 15cc's of it and I was pulling really hard on the plunger and when I pulled the needle and syringe out of the vial it flew back up and right into my finger....numbed up my finger for the day.

I've done the same thing - Epsom salt. Stings, but no swelling. I've also used liquid bandages to good effect.

I ended up not going to the doctor...no swelling, no more redness than expected with a wound, no fever. Thanks for the advice though, everyone!

I have been bitten mainly by horses. The two worst ones are I was bit in the face by my moms racehorse when I was young (2nd grade). I wanted to give him a kiss goodnight and my mom went to grab me but missed my jacket and he bit me. He didnt go straight on, instead he turned sideways, if he did go straight he would have basically ripped my nose off. I ended up with a couple of cuts and that was it🙂

Another one was when I went to feed a pony of mine and my hand happened to find its way into his mouth. He had a sharp point on one of tooth and it sliced my finger. It is still deformed to this day, but it was a good slice.

I have gotten bitten so many times by one of my horses, Nate. He has gotten my arm, leg, foot, shoulder, etc.. Its mainly when I am doing up the girth, but since he got older he doesnt do it quite as often.

OH and I have been bitten by my old bird. They hurt MORE than anything I have experience and thats why I will not be working with them when I am a vet.

I got bit by a Chow while volunteering. Gave no warning; got me as I was reaching over to flip it on its side with another tech. Scary part was it went right for my neck and I had puncture wounds on either side of my neck.

It let right go right away so it was clearly just giving me the don't mess with me warning. If it were really mad I guess I wouldn't be here now.

Pressure on the wounds and a few stitches and I was as good as new.

It was a good lesson though as now I maintain a healthy awareness about even the most calm dogs, especially when I am near their heads.

I got bit by a Chow while volunteering. Gave no warning;

The warning was that it is a Chow.

Two dog bites in 3 years as a vet assistant/tech. One dog bite required stitches, the other was a nasty puncture.

I also cut myself with a blade trying to remove it from the scalpel handle when somebody had put it in water still attached. Forceps slipped off and I ran my thumb clean across it. That needed stitches too.

Two cat bites in 1 year as a research cat colony tech. To be fair, it's because I was the go-to person for handling the mean cats.

Me and Augmentin, we tight.

The warning was that it is a Chow. ...

Me and Augmentin, we tight.

Ditto BOTH of these.

Yesterday I got my ass kicked by 6 pounds of terrified kitten. We do house calls, and we went to a house to examine two newly adopted kittens for some of my favorite clients (their elderly cat passed away a month ago or so).
Boy kitten bolted as soon as we opened the bathroom door, and I had the girl kitten until she started alligator rolling and scratched my thigh. I managed to catch the boy and he was perfect once I had him scruffed. We got the girl herded back into the kitchen, had her blocked off, caught her, and she lost her little mind as soon as I tried to hold her. Shredded both palms and the back of one of my hands, and I STILL hadn't let her go until my boss told me to. Then she proceeded to back up, get a running start, and use my shoulder as a launch pad to exit the room. 😱

So here's me, trying to call in our charges to the clinic and get the bag of stuff packed up all while attempting not to bleed on the floor. I managed to bleed through my scrubs both on my thigh and my shoulder, and my hands are a disaster!
Not a bite story, but it's the worst beating I've had in a while. 😉

i spent 3 hours of christmas in the ER due to a dog bite. when i was leaving my aunt's house, i turned to say thanks and merry christmas. my aunt was holding the dog and when i turned, it lunged at my face, splitting open my top lip.

not awesome.

The first bite I can remember was actually from a turkey.

My parents had taken me to my first state fair and I managed to wonder-off to the petting zoo (which was a feat in-and-of-itself because I was one of those leashed kids in the late 80s). Anyways, my attempt at picking up the turkey quickly turned into getting bit in the butt and getting chased by the turkey. So there I am, running in circles for dear life (and I’m told, screaming apologies), when my parents finally tracked me down and witnessed “turkey bites” 2, 3 and 4. (Needless to say, I haven’t tried to pick up a turkey since.)

Unfortunately, my bad luck at petting zoos continues. During one of my earliest Brookfield Zoo trips, I had my pants pulled down by a goat in front of my entire kindergarten class. And at Lincoln Park Zoo, my best “Nintendo” t-shirt was ripped at the seams by a llama! (Come on!)

[This is apparently a genetic defect, because my grandma—who is practically a saint—once had to punch an elephant in the trunk because it was trying to pick my mom up by her shirt...]

It is amazing what those little beasts can do and in such a short amount of time. I had something similar happen to me. I had the cat scruffed and stretched we gave it an injection and it freaked started to alligator roll so I lifted it up by its scruff and held it off the table. It somehow managed to attach both its front and back claws to my arm while still being scruffed. I made sure no one was in the way before I let go of it. Luckily I was able to instantly grab her back up and put her back in her kennel. I had claw marks from my wrist down to my elbow. I hope your scratch marks heal quickly those things sting for a long time for some reason.

I was once bitten by a cancerous dog on the lip lol. It was quite a sad story actually. A client was bringing in their small dog to be euthanized because it had a tumor the size of a grapefruit on it's stomach, and when I went to grab it, he turned and bit my lip. It was a bit akward actually because I was more concerned that the owner was already having a bad day, and she was more concerned about my lip.

I know we're not supposed to stereotype, but I wish there were certain breeds I could avoid like the plague when I become a vet. These include (but are not necessarily limited to) German Shepherds, Miniature Pinschers, Chihuahuas and Chows. I've just had really bad "close call-type" experiences with these breeds, including getting my finger chomped on by a Maltese. She was boarding with us at the clinic, and I bent down to put some food in her bowl for dinner..next thing I know *CHOMP*. I was so mad, I had someone else give her dinner, I just didn't feel like being nice! Two can play that game, haha (very mature, I know!). I have never been bitten by a cat..just accidentally scratched from routine handling, but I've always been a cat person. I probably just jinxed myself, but I find them really relaxing. I think they can sense that, or maybe I'm just nuts. I am definitely not a big fan of working with horses. I feel like they can read my mind, and it wigs me out, haha! I'll definitely leave the horses to you equine lovers. I guess I've been pretty lucky, but I know that serious bites come with the job. It'll happen sooner or later..

I agree...except I will take the Chows and German Shepherds...they are so cute! Anything that is under 15 pounds though I do not want to deal with they have bad attitudes.

IMO, you are nuts. 😉 😛 Cats are not that bad, but I would not consider them to be relaxing.

I'll take your shepherds...you can have my pugs and boston terriers.

My list: Pugs, boston terriers, chihuahuas, min pins, and anything with a "poo" or a "shih"" in it.

I ended up not going to the doctor...no swelling, no more redness than expected with a wound, no fever. Thanks for the advice though, everyone!

If a cat bite is getting infected you will know it. I had one bite one my hand that I cleaned up good and wanted to ignore, but by about 6 hours it was perfectly clear that the swelling redness/swelling was moving across my hand with no signs of stopping.

I love GSDs. I'll pass on Akitas, Chows, rat terriers, and Cocker Spaniels.
Really, I'll handle just about anything that comes through the door. One day we had the two littlest girls in the clinic restraining 150lbs of angry, unneutered Rottie while I drew blood and vaccinated faster than I EVER have. He was muzzled, but was snarling and trying to snap the whole time, and I think he weighed more than the three of us combined!

We all have to be a little nuts! 😉

I forgot one..Poodles!

Uuuuuugh. I thought I was the only one that hated them!
I tend to like the stereotypically scary breeds. Dobies, Rotties, Great Danes 🙂love🙂 and Pit Bulls. We've got one Pit that comes in, flops over on his back in your lap, and will let you do literally whatever you want as long as you rub his tummy. He'll hold his paws out for you to trim his nails!

I used to absolutely hate standard poodles. Still hate the little ones, but my boss has the NICEST standard in the whole world. He's got such a great temperment, even if he is a little bit of a goof. And he's huge--almost 70 pounds, and only about a year old 😱 He's not fat at all either...just big, solid, red fluff.

I kind of want a standard poodle...

It's the little ones with brains the size of walnuts that are the worst.

Schnauzers haven't turned out to be a favorite of mine... but we see a LOT of those for whatever reason. So maybe there's just more opportunity to find a few bad ones. The worst dogs I've encountered were mix breeds - one at about 7 lbs and one more like 15 lbs. One was nearly impossible to muzzle, the other was muzzled, but struggled so much that the muzzle came off - erk! I did NOT let go. I was gonna strangle that dog before I let him go, lol.

We have a mean Corgi that comes in for nail trims too, but my girl behaves really well. So you really can't generalize. Though, I admit, I have yet to meet a minpin that I liked.

OH... I just thought of something. Weimaraners. They're insane. Not mean, just terrified of everything. It's pretty difficult to take a temp on an 80 lb dog that keeps trying to hide under the chair in the exam room.
