Hi everyone!

I will be applying to AVC this November and I am wondering about animal/vet experience. I feel the other parts of my application are fairly strong; this area is definitely my weakness. At time of application I will likely have 50-150 hours in SA clinics (depends if 2 clinics I contacted can give me hours in the fall, will definitely have 50 from one), 125 hours at the SPCA, 80 hours in animal research lab, and 80 hours at a dog groomer. I'm trying to get experience with a LA clinic, considering going to Alberta for a week or 2 for that.

If other parts of my application are pretty strong, is lack of experience going to stop me from getting in? I want to know what other AVC applicants think. I'm from NS, btw. Thanks! :)

I think you're looking pretty good, considering that it's more than 3 months from application due date.
I get the sense that AVC is more concerned with variety of experience rather than valuing bulk hours.
I'd rack up as many more Small Animal Hours, and as many Large Animal hours as possible between now and mid october..

I'd say it would be possible to get in with what you have now, but NS is quite competitive so you'd need to make up ground on the other top applicants in other areas, which may not be that easy.

Without knowing your avg, GRE, extracurriculars, etc, it's impossible to say what your chances really are (and even with that info, its dicey).
But you're certainly a viable applicant. Just keep boosting the variety of your animal experiences. If you could find a specialist of some sort to shadow, that'd be a nice addition.

You have a good base to work with, just keep on down this road and you'll get in sooner or later.

Thanks New Foundland!

My pre-req average is 87% right now; with my fall courses I think the highest I can get it is 89%. I can't remember my exact GRE score, but the percentiles were 87 V, 65 Q, and 60 writing. As for extracurricular activities, I'll have all 10 slots filled mostly with employment and volunteering (one club activity); approx. 5000 hours total.

I'm going to try my best to get as much experience and as much diversity as possible before November and hope things turn out well :)
