For the not-so-tech savvy folk like myself. My account become corrupt out of the blue and I lost all the decks I've made. Not sure how to fix this and the user manual is way above my head. Any easy fixes?

**nevermind! Found the backup files hidden in the computer.

But this makes me wonder if I should be syncing regularly with the web or backing it up somehow? Advice?

Same thing happened to me this morning! I thought it was a problem with my computer but maybe not. And yes you should definitely sync with AnkiWeb, because losing all of your progress would be extremely sub-optimal.

For me it happened when I realized I could make multiple profiles. So I did. And then I renamed my normal one and as I tried to open it back up bam, everything was gone. It seems like everything gets backed up on the harddrive but I'm not familiar with how to back it up with AnkiWeb. Is it an easy process?

Yes, just make an account online, then sign in on your desktop application (click the little gear symbol in the corner and it will ask for your username and password). Depending on how many cards you have, it may take up to an hour for the whole thing to sync up, so you might have to wait a little. It's great, though. I can sync my decks with my iPad and do it on the bike/elliptical and then sync it back up with my computer, and I don't have to worry about my hard drive dying and losing years of Anki.

If you back it up to the cloud you can also sync to your phone, laptop, ipad, etc! Study while waiting in line at the supermarket!

update: made an ankiweb account and seem to have synced my plethora of decks to the ankiweb cloud.

Everytime I make a new card/deck on the desktop program, then close out, it'll automatically sync?

yes or you could press the sync button on the upper right corner.
