I've become really confused over what actually constitutes the ankle joint. In Moore's clinically orientated anatomy and the Dartmouth website (Chapter 17: The ankle and foot) it says that the ankle joint is just says that the talocrural joint is involved. However, on Kenhub it says that the subtalar joint is also part of the ankle joint.

It makes more sense to me that the subtalar joint is included as ankle sprains are caused by over-inversions or over-eversions - which are the actions of the subtalar joint.

Please can someone clear this up

Thanks!
