I watched the whole thing. Interesting stuff. Prop to the anesthesiologists who planned and executed fiberoptic intubation.

I particularly enjoyed the segment where they said, if anesthesiologists cannot secure the airway, there will be no surgery. Made me feel appreciated and how important we really are.

I took care of a "chin-to-chest" syndrome patient as a resident. Definitely not folded in half like this guy, but chin was firmly affixed to her chest, which still obviously made the airway management unique. That being said, my attending decided we'd just avoid it altogether and we did a continuous spinal (it was a femur fracture as I recall). Totally took the fun out of the case as a resident, though in retrospect, I'd go the same route if presented with that case again.

They could always get a CRNA... 😛

Tangential comment.

Despite our problems, I’d like to think that somebody in the USA would not be allowed to get to this degree of disease progression without intervention and live this way for 28 years. For that I am grateful to be living in this country.

That’s more of a statement about the importance of a secured airway not about the guy who manages to get it in.

WOW! The Chinese did something on their own without relying on stealing someone else’s technology and had an original accomplishment. This is very impressive.

They invented paper and now this. Let’s see if they can somehow manage to do it again at least one more time with something else.

I bet the government is so proud of this video

how so? i think it is amazing to see medical advances and challenging surgical/anesthesia cases no matter where in the world.
By showing the one sided-ness of a two sided coin. Amazing that they have this cutting edge technology is all they want you to think, and that's the curtain they drape over the fact that if they had adequate medical care for enough of their people, the disease would have never progressed so far.
This one sided-ness has always been the front of communism. How much money did the Soviet union pour into the space program and how many Ukrainians starved? How much did this surgery cost while so many tens of millions of Chinese live in poverty. The communist dictators give money where is is best seen, not best implemented.

Yall know the majority of anesthesia in China is provided by a nurse right? like > 95%.

dont think this is true anymore. used to be 20 years ago

at same time, most MDs in china are bachelor degrees ... to be hired by good hospital , need to do masters/phd afterwards

you guys making yourselves feel better?
your capitalist system leaves a lot to be desired too.

there is a middle ground

healthcare in china is a LOT more affordable than it is in the US.

I wonder how many of these bashers have ever been to China or spent any time in one of the hospitals there..
**not sarcastic*
Have you? What's it like.
I've never lived in a currently communist country but I spent most of my school-age years in countries that had very recently been communist (like within a decade-decade and a half kinda recently) and lemme tell you about eastern European healthcare....😢

Yes I have. I grew up in Hong Kong and spent a fair amount of time across the border in "communist" China. It has become much less communist and more aptly described as single party socialist capitalist. I have also spent a summer during med school on an externship at a hospital over there, and while the facilities are not as impressive and the technology isn't as advanced as it is over here, and perhaps some of their practices are a little weird, I dont think for once that they are brainwashed on indoctrinated or have bad care.

I think they just don’t care on some level or just don’t think it mattered. Worked with a young Chinese medical student for a while. Almost a year I believe. Told her to really immerse herself with what I deemed “liberating” information. Like Tiananmen Square, corrupted communists really are..... never once she discussed that with me. Or maybe she’s scared?

It’s very different from us who’s observing it from outside than people who are experiencing it from the inside. We believe they should know better, those within just believe it is how it is. Brainwashed, perhaps.

I think they are forward looking and many do not want to talk about the past. They aren't dumb. Many of them are aware of Tianammen square and other things. Many of thr wealthier and more educated Chinese have VPN and access to outside information. Facebook, Google, things that are normally restricted by the Great Firewall of China. Tons of Chinese tourists vacation outside the country. The communist regime was brutal under Mao. It has softened significantly from a socioeconomic standpoint despite regional inequalities and people are optimistic despite the political authoritarianism. Life has gotten 1000x better in a single generation.

I imagine you telling the Chinese student to liberate their mind was met w the same incredulousness and eye rolling as if someone told you to liberate your mind about institutional racism, slavery, massacres of american Indians, political meddling in latin America, recreational drug use, obesity, and gun violence in America. A shrug of the shoulder and maybe asking self why some wacko would bring up random topics that you can't really do mich about. The Chinese are often quiet socially and hold their tongue. But I can imagine an outspoken one would retort by telling you to get your own house in order before being critical of others

I love this response.
But come on, this is America. We are better than everyone in everything! That’s why we meddle so much in others’ affairs.

So I assume even though you grew up in China you aren’t Chinese? But can read, write and understand it? How cool.

I think it can always be better and should get better. There is nothing good about Tiananmen Square, there are no two sides. I was afraid what would happen to my people. I merely wanted a acknowledgement, a discussion, perhaps with the Chinese visiting student or “scholar.”

“random topics that you can't really do mich about.”
Don’t we try? Shouldn’t we try? I tell my patients on average it take 7 tries before one quit smoking completely. I ask my patient if they lost weight after their bariatric surgery if I see it in their chart. I nod in agreement when my obese patients tell me they cannot do 4 Mets and acknowledge they should lose weight.

I am not Chinese, depends on what working definition you have. I speak, read and write Mandarin fluently. So some of the assumptions on your part may not correct. I don’t want this to become a political thread about politics.

I am not sure nor know enough about Anesthesia in China to comment on rest of the discussion.

There are two sides, actually. You've accepted the western media narrative.
Yes, a great deal of civilians/ university students were killed. The exact number is unclear.
Police officers and some soldiers were also killed. The first people killed were due to the student mob.
The background, motivations, and actions taken are still debated today.
While it is easy to paint this as "defenseless pro-democracy university students massacred by overpowering communist government with tanks and machine guns" there is more to what happened than that.

You've made my point. You acknowledge and comment on things that are relevant to your clinical practice. Should someone ask you about why Trump tweets incessantly? Or should someone liberate your mind about the Kent State Massacre and how it parallels with what happened in authoritarian China? How would you know? What does that have to do with you?

Dude you made it political by even bringing this up. The problem is you have predetermined that democracy is always the best that you do not see the flaws or problems with the way things are run here. Perhaps you've been brainwashed into this specific political ideology. I argue that while democracy is great (not the American system though), it is not always the greatest in every situation.
