Hi Everyone,

Does FA seem to stike anyone else with just a laundry list of associations (especially in the history/pe parts) whereas, SUTM actually explains stuff...

For CK, has anyone thought of primarily using Step-up-MED (SUTM) since it seems to be more fleshed out and comprehensive than FA, and medicine makes up so much of the exam. (I never used SUTM during the rotation but like it now). However, FA seems to be the favorite and obviously I would read it for the other subjects like peds, ob....

I jsut think that FA just lists alot of things but SUTM actually gives you reasoning, what does everyone else think??😕

Also, for any who used kaplan videos, did you think listening to them is sufficient or is it better to follw them with the kaplan text and annotate stuff in FA or whatever.

It makes sense to me, IM is 60% of the test and I'm annotating UW notes in SUTM instead. However though, recently I realize that it might be too wordy of a book to reread again when you're looking for that book that condenses everything in for a quick review. So far I'm still deciding which book to put my notes in... the notes are still on a blank sheet of paper that haven't been filled into the proper section in the book yet.

I'm doing the same and don't know yet what book should I use as a main. I wanted to put all notes in MTB, but many says it's full or errors.

thanks for the replies,

Anyone think this is NOT a good idea???

Plan was to annotate step-up-to MEDICINE, for all med q-bank questions, and all others (peds, ob, psych) get annotated in first aid. Just worried not gonna have enough time to read both, or will be spreading myself too thin.....

Please advise, thanks a bunch!

just make sure you don't neglect the other areas. while medicine is the biggest area, doing well on psych, ob, peds, surg is essential for a great score.

How about a Step Up to Medicine + Using Step Up to Step 2 for the other sections (OB, Peds, etc)

SUTM+Step Up to Step 2 + World

Why couldn't FA make a money book for step 2 🙂

It would be nice if FA for step 2 was like step 1's. But FA step 2ck just seems so dense. However, SUTM is really detailed, and judging by how everyone here swears by FA, am I to assume you don't need as much detail as offered in SUTM?

Oh the agony of choosing a book...!

BTW, how long does it take people to get through 100 UW questions a day?

Thanks, luck to all studying.

If you want to review the answers to the question in depth and not memorizing the answer choice outright, then it will take time. From my personal experience, it took between 50-60 minutes to do a block of 44 questions and sometimes up to 90 minutes to review it properly.

I'm actually in the same boat. I have about 4 wks to study, so far for the past week I've been doing:

1. Kaplan notes
2. FA quick skim

UW - 44 subject based
Review - putting answers into FA, and rereading it in the process.
And whatever I don't understand well, I have SUTM open next to me as a quick reference.

However, I did read SUTM (most of it) during my core. It's ALOT of info. The good thing about it is that it tells you Best initial, Most accurate tests, where FA just lists all the tests/meds needed.

If you've already been through SUTM once before, and you have a truncated time table, I'd recommend sticking with UW/FA/Kaplan with a little SUTM on the side. And just make sure you know, Best/First Diagnostic test, Best Tx, etc. etc. for each disease.

Granted, this is only my opinion, and most of my friends that just took the exam said that FA was not detailed enough, and they wished they had stressed more of Kaplan OR SUTM (which are comparable).

.02 cents

I have read (online) SUTM on google books, and what I have found is that it just lists the diagnostic tests without mentioning best intial/most accurate. Do you use SUTM (wich edition), or SUT step II?

What do you think about using kaplan as refrence, annotating MTB from kaplan, go through secrets, and UW, does it work to get a sort comprehensive review after you write down all notes?

Is explanation of disease mechanisms better in kaplan than SUTM?

Thanks

does MTB mention "next best step"? or "initial test" or "diagnostic test" or "gold standards"? thinkin bout getting it for step 3 but i dunno what's good or not for it ...

I have noted these terms in some disease as I read through the online preview at google books. Take a look so you can decide.

MTB is better in terms of step by step order of what you should do. However, it lacks on why you should do it, detailed pathophys and some of the lesser yield topics compared to SUTM.

It's hard to choose one source, but I'd say use both. MTB for note taking and fast-paced review towards the end and SUTM for a reference book and topic in-depth reviews.
