Hi, this is my first time posting although I have been on this site many times.
I work as a pharmacy tech at a hospital and peroiodically the boss (a pharmacist) who is a nice guy always hints and sometimes blatently tells me to look at other health professional degrees like optometry or dentistry bascially not pharmacy. He seems to be disgruntled with Pharmacy in general and thinks every other profession is better than pharmacy. I actually asked him today why he hates pharmacy so much after he was hinting towards optometry or osetopathy and he replies by saying "I dont hate pharmacy." Frankly, he is getting on my nerves becuase he keeps putting down pharmacy, making me feel bad. He constantly tells me to go to the different professional colleges to see what they offer. The first time he was telling me this I was a bit shocked now its just getting annoying. I mean now a days you need to have top grades to get into school and it is a fairly lengthy process. Pharmacy has a lot of postive aspects but it kind of gets to you when someone has such a negative attitude and is telling you to "..think it through...". Everyone else I have talked to outside of the Pharmacy are very encouraging. The reason for my post is because I just needed a place to vent in a way. I have B.S in biology and will be going to Nova's pharmacy school in the fall.

hang around positive people and positive things will happen

Congrats on your admission to nova

If it's so bad, tell him to quit and pursue these other jobs he's telling you to get into... I bet you he won't; Pharmacy is good 👍 .

Everybody is where they want to be. If they didn't want to be there...they wouldn't be. The disgruntled pharmacist will be disgruntled where ever he is.

Screw him. Tell him to go be an optometrist if he likes it so much.

how tao.

I used to work with a pharmacist like that. Especially when it came around to winter holidays and we would have lines of angry patients snaking down aisles, he would holler, "HEY ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO GO TO PHARMACY SCHOOL?" And whats worse is that I just worked with a floater last week who dissed the profession AND the SOP I'll be attending this fall! 🙄 You'll find some of these folks in every profession. Don't feel bad! I've gotten used to it and in a way I welcome the negative input because it challenges my decision to pursue pharmacy and makes me aware of the negative aspects. In the end I always feel more secure with my decision to go into pharmacy because at least I know how to avoid or I am ok with whatever that bothers my pharmacist so much. Does your pharmacist ever mention why you shouldn't do pharmacy?

The next time he says something like that, just ask him why you should consider optometry or denistry instead of pharmacy. I would be curious to hear what his answer would be. Maybe he just needs someone to complain too, but maybe there's something about pharmacy that he really doesn't like.

By any chance, does your boss go by the nickname "Slaver"?

i have by far the worst pharmacy manager. my pharmacy manager is such a jerk to the new clerks. he has no patients and screams at them, thinking that's the only way they will learn. we're short on people because a clerk just recently quit. however, to give you an idea how mean he is, cashiers in front of the general store do not want to be transfered to the pharmacy because of all the mean and horrible things they have heard about my manager. Monday's are really hectic and these are days i really don't want to work with my pharmacy manager. sometimes, it gets to the point where you just want to walk out of there cuz you can't take it anymore. I STILL LOVE pharmacy, but i just hate my boss.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

Is the pharmacy manager like that to the pharmacist too, or just the clerks? If you're a pharmacist do you have to take that kind of treatment or can you pretty much tell the manager to f*** off and go work somewhere else?

no he's not rude and mean to the pharmacist. i just think its because for clerks, its a learning process. there's so much you have to learn about what goes on in a pharmacy. as a fairly new clerk, I basically ask ANY and ALL questions, maybe to the point where the pharmacy manager hates answering them.

Does the pharmacy manager treat the pharmacist as an equal, or does he still pretty much make it known that he's the boss and running the pharmacy?

When I went on my first interview for the company I currently work for, I was asked about 10 times (or more 🙄 ) by the pharmacy manager why I wanted to do retail pharmacy. Apparently she had wanted to do hospital pharmacy but had never broken into it. Her bitterness and persistence was just really annoying. Since I really liked the company, I called the DM and flat out told him that I would like to look at other stores in the area. My current boss and I clicked really well at our interview. We were supposed to make it fast, like 10-15 minutes, but ended up chatting for about an hour. Definitely go with a preceptor that you enjoy and want to emulate, if given a choice. The decision you make is going to affect your future practice. It's one of the most important decisions you can make as a student, IMO.

He once said that dentists get paid more and the day before yesterday I overheard him telling another pharmacist that an optometrist is a G15. I work as a temp. at a VA and I think the G stuff correlates with money and a G15 is high up there, but my thing is a pharmacist gets paid good money. I dont see what he is complaining about, there are so many other jobs out there, professional high degree requiring jobs that do not get paid as well. When I talk to the other people I work with at the pharmacy they just say that he is getting ready to retire and bitter. Money isn't always everything its an important factor but not everything.

thanks everybody for your words of encouragement

i cant believe he's complaining about that.. Well, my theory doesn't work then.. 😳 Man, you should just ask him why he doesn't just go to optometry school or dentistry school if he thinks those fields are so great..
