I heard that an annual chest x-ray may become standard screening for patients. I also heard that MRI of breast for breast cancer screening may become standard screening as well. What have you guys heard? Any thoughts?

Breast MRI isn't nearly specific enough to be a cost-effective screening test for an average risk population. If it happens, then it's a mistake.

have not heard any evidence that supported annual chest xrays... although i do know IM docs who do this to increase profits $$$.

Considering a chest xray gets you about 6 dollars (0.18 RVU x 33.97 = $6.11)...I'd say it would be more of a nuisance than a cash cow....

yeah but that's just the professional fee. when you add this to the usual UA, EKG, DEXA scan, pap smear, peak flow, etc... things add up. if you can on average increase $10/ patient and you see 20 patients per day then that is an extra $50k per year.... which as a primary care doc, increases your salary by a 1/3!

Well, a normal CXR takes a seasoned radiologist about 15 seconds to read and dictate...so $6 is pretty good.
