I know this topic has been discussed many times but I am still worried. Freshmen year I got a minor in possession of alcohol violation. I went to court was given a fine and community service. From what I remember the record was expunged a month later. So going with that I already submitted my primary and the majority of my secondaries without even mentioning it. Someone just told me that it stays on your record regardless. Does anyone know if I can use certiphi to run a background check on myself? Or whats the cheapest way of finding out if I am safe? Has anyone else gone through something like this? Was it a bad idea not mentioning it?

I think it's usually best to just disclose. I had an alcohol violation when I applied to law schools, and I called a couple of the admissions offices to figure out what to do. The WORST thing you can do is lie, and sometimes omitting information can be considered lying. I would call the schools you've applied to and just be COMPLETELY up front and say you had just forgotten about the violation and ask if you need to send them anything regarding it.

Btw, having had the violation was not a big deal and I was accepted to plenty of schools. As long as it doesn't look like you have a serious substance abuse problem, it is typically a non-issue. Everyone knows underage college students drink.

are you sure it was expunged? usually you have to pay a certain amount of money after paying the fines and probation. Also when you get it expunged you usually go to court again and sign some paperwork.

Im in the same case mip probation and fines and got it dismissed, i thought it was expunged but it was not

the good news is you would not have to disclose on primary for dismissed cases. However, Some secondaries require you to disclose it even if its dismissed i would double check on every secondary you submitted and just make sure. As above poster commented, its going to look really bad if you dont mention something you were supposed to. You might have to mail some schools iASAP f this is the case.

FYI dismissed cases show up on Criminal background check as dismissed. Expunged do not.
if you call the court where you had your hearing at, they will tell you the specifics. I suggest reading the prompts and asking whether you need to disclose or not.

I was in the exact same situation and was freaking out. The good news is that most secondaries dont ask about dismissed cases, ive only disclosed like 3 from 20. I dont think it will be a big deal if you mail them and explain your mistakes for the ones that need disclosure.

i'm sorry, i didnt even make it through your first sentence. got too hung up on your sn 🙂

Have your own personal criminal background check done. If your offense appears on your check, then disclose it. "I thought it was expunged" is not an good excuse for non-disclosure if something turns up.

What website do you recommend? am I allowed to use certiphi?

You should know if it was expunged or not. If it was expunged then don't report it. If they say something showed up in your records tell them it was expunged and should not show up on any records(maybe bring the papers showing it was expunged if you have them)

That might answer some questions.
I got an MIP too, in highschool right after turning 18, it sucked ( I plead not guilty to mine though, which somehow worked even though I was caught red handed double fisting 24 oz Bud lites. However, worst case scenario, you do have to disclose it. Some school with of course frown on it, but if you have a competitive application otherwise they will be more likely to overlook it.

Now imagine if you got a DUI. THAT would suck hardcore.

Hey, I know you. You posted this in the osteopathic thread: "Heres the truth, I am a complete pot head, I smoke like a G*d D*mn chimney". You drink like a fish, too?

It looks like you may have a serious substance abuse problem. Please get some help.
