If you had the drive and determination your parents did to help you (or pay entirely for) your pharmacy school, then you wouldn't flunk the "spiced up" NAPLEX, so your hypothesis is moot.

We don't need tougher licensure exams. We need tougher admissions standards. We need the PCAT to not be a frakking joke.

Exactly. I'm sure the licensing exam is hard enough as it is and rightly so. Admission standards need to go up so people don't get their hopes up only to be crushed. People know what they can and can't do. Someone with a 2.0 gpa knows he will probably not get through med school. Why? Because of the standards. My mom told me that one of her co-worker's daughter got through pharmacy school. Her grades in high school were all C's. How the hell is that possible? I think she went to a 0-6 yr pharm school in Pennsylvania. I think USP...wish I applied there sooner. God damn it.

I got a ton of Cs in high school. Ds and Fs, too.

Of course, I did nothing but play football and skip class...

...but high school is pointless, anyway. I'm glad I floated through it expending minimal effort.

Eh, there are people that entered here with many Cs, and there are people here who entered with straight As. By the time people get to their professional years, everyone understands that they either have to work hard or they will not stay in the program. And it's true that some people don't know what they're capable of, and fail out. But high school success is not always an indicator of pharmacy school success.

I know a few pharmacists and they are arrogant, entitled ***s but don’t know it. You people have had it good, too good for the last ten years and you will finally get what you got coming in the next few years. Yes, I understand you had to bust your ass through school and you feel that you deserve to be rewarded but the fact is, the actual job is just a glorified stock clerk who pretends to be a health care worker. I can’t stand this elitism that you think you are better than nurses. No, nurses are the true health care workers. Most that decide to go into pharmacy are antisocial, bookworm types who don’t have the creativity/work ethic/people skills to make it elsewhere and just want to hide behind a counter pushing pills and rake in $50+/hr. Very soon, the corporations will have their way and you will see that pay cut in half which is more than fair for what you do and compared to what other people get paid. Those who are counting on “expanded services” for pharmacists are seriously living in LALA land. It is far more likely the corporations will consolidate the existing services, so one pharmacist using a dispensing machine can do the work of many. Those who do find “expanded” work will take their rightful place and work under their supervision of a RN administering doses at a LPN’s pay. Face it, pharmacy is the most redundant profession there is. You are stock clerks—you don’t have any unique skills that allow you to differentiate from each other. People who do the work of machines will eventually get replaced by them. Go into drug research or something worthwhile that adds value to the product.

Ok, which diploma mill turned you down?

You forgot ugly. Then again, maybe you didn't want to make this personal?

Wow, seems to me that you must be a modern day Nostradamus...too bad you couldn't see the future of IT, before jumping into that pit. :meanie:

So what do you think I'm doing every day while working in a hospital?

Also, I have a lot of respect for nurses in general. There are a few bad ones that give them a bad rep- same as pharmacists.

Well actually I was smart enough to see the writing on the wall and jump ship when I was offered a nice unionized government job. I predict I will be making more than you within 5 years so go make all the jokes you want.

I have a lot of respect for nurses, I have little for over-educated pill counters.

Hmmm, do I want to clean bedpans or count pills? Decisions, decisions...

(I love nurses, ok? Minimal flaming, alright? Please?)

Just to give a shout out to rep all my RN friends, we should all be very grateful that nurses do what they do, for every grotesque scenario of patient care many would prefer not to do, a nursetakes care of it. Sure there may ne a few cranky ones (just like there are a few angry pharmDs, MDs, etc), but most of the RNs I work with are really nice and for every time I help one of them out, they help me out (w/pt condition details prior to a dosing/rec to MD, etc). I know you all were not knocking them, but i have a feeling Rham Emmanual, or whatever dudes name was that just got banned, was stating just that. NEway what he failed to realize in his anti pharmacy, etc rant, is that if our profession fell apart most of use are intellectually inclined enough to be successful in another career/profession. Common sense would likely lead one to believe that you would want more professions/careers to stay/become high paying in light of the fact that there has been such a flight of jobs overseas, if you wish ill will on every job you see as overpaid, you would soon see no viable career options for our country. I personally LIKE the idea of friends in other professions getting paid well (md, rn, od, dds, etc) and hope that they would wish the same for me, it's sort of the "all ships rise with the tide" theory, if my MD buddies start making 60k/yr, then it's gonna be hard to imagine pharmacy getting paid more than them. Point is, don't waste time complaining on an Internet forum about how life isn't fair, and dissing the same profession as the forum you are posting in; no wonder this individual didn't make the grade, no empathy/altruism/decency whatsoever.

Last I checked Obama just instituted a freeze on all federal wages outside of the military, and virtually every local gov't is doing the same in addition to cutting jobs, have fun with your head on the sand, austerity measures for governmental benefits are coming very soon. You are perhaps the most ignorant individual I have every heard of on the inernet and you have not one iota of knowledge of present macroeconomic conditions, thus you must not watch CNBC/follow the market/participate in any form of investment activity in which I highly doubt you will be in anywhere near a better financial position than those on SDN, in fact I predict you will be a wage earner the rest of your life, and when your working years are over you will depend on uncle Sam to carry you through your elder years, if uncle Sam even exists in the not so distant future. A bit of advice, learn mandarin.

I could be wrong but I think he's Canadian.

So I understand and agree with everything that is being said in the article, but do you guys really think anything is going to change from a few publications? I mean, it's nice the academic world is taking notice, but I don't think the new schools will stop taking students because of it.....

Schools won't stop taking students because of it, my belief is the market will eventually correct itself the way it did with physical therapy back in the late 90's/early 00's to its status today, how that will happen?..i can only guess..

If you are planning on Uncle Sugar taking care of you then you have a big surprise waiting for you. In case you haven't noticed half of the State governments are near bankruptcy with many soon to follow. The federal government isn't far behind. If there is one sector I would be very worried about working in it is the government sector. I would say in five years you would be lucky to still have a job. So keep on dreaming in your fantasy world Nancy.

this.

there may be union "contracts" and stuff, but guess who you are working for in the end.. the american voter and taxpayer... they may not be too smart overall but when they get angry they have been known to take some pretty crazy actions.

in states like california you can already see it happening , what is it the government said ? a few months ago or something? "gotta cut x% and x billion dollars from every program" ? this means cutting workers and jobs eventually.

in the private sector you at least know, if you are making your company good profit and the company is making good profit, you are stable... relatively speaking. in the public sector, your job depends on the whims of administrators and american voters.. in the private sector admins are generally going to make decisions that are good for the company as a whole and will keep it afloat. (*generally*) , but in government , your entire job or division could be based on some administrator's unwise spending decision that nobody cares about until the taxpayers get angry. seems less stable when viewed that way

In my state there is a school that provides free undergrad tuition for people who graduate the intensive high school curriculum. State high school, state tuition for college. People hear that it adds up to be like 5 million dollars per 4 years for 300 students and then another 10k spent on the students by the state so basically 8 milllion dollars over a like, 6-8 years. Now people get upset hearing 8 million dollars over 8 years come election time and so the program gets cut. No one ever knew that 8 million over 6! years was only like 0.003% of the overall education budget. They just saw millions of dollars so now the program is cut.

Same thing with side projects in federal spending. You hear large dollar figures but once you know how much the total budget is, you aren't too upset.

Stupid people always have larger numbers and make people pay for it. Pro tip for pharmacy, too.
