So with my actual DAT I can finally ask. I know it's late to apply at this moment but just wanted some opinions.

DAT:
TS/AA/PAT
23/22/22

GPA:
Before postbac: science 2.1 nonscience 3.0 ogpa 2.56
Postbac (all science) about 70 ~80 credits: 3.8

Current: sci 3.1 ogpa 3.1

200 hours shadowing. 1 year working at dental office.
Few volunteering here and there but nothing impressive.Barely can make time due to work and school.

I'm applying UOP, Columbia, NYU, USC, UCSF, UNLV so far.

some feedback would be great 😀😀
Thanks in advance

That 2.1 science in undergrad is killer. With that said you did well after and brought it up and had a good DAT. This is all opinion, but I doubt you'll get in at Columbia but probably have a good shot at the other places.

It's really impressive that you have significantly improved your GPA. I think you would stand a pretty good chance, I would apply abroadly to maximize your chances and best to you.

Agreed with the above. I think this will definitely impress the admissions committee since you did a great job in your post-bacc. Apply to a couple more schools. Great job on the DAT scores! 🙂

Good job on the DAT compared to your pretty low GPA. I would definitely apply to more schools. Probably look to apply to about 10-12 to be on the safe side if you really want to get in this cycle. And look at broader options, especially schools with lower GPA averages just to have some back ups. Just my opinion...

Thanks guys for the response. So far I'm not sure if I should still apply because my LOR are mediocre by far except for 1 professor and 1 dentist, 2 science professors are ok. PS is about to be done. Although I raised my gpa drastically, its still on the lower end and not sure if applying this late is still worth a shot IMO. One more year of postbac would increase my gpa to 3.4 both ogpa an sgpa.

Still apply or wait until next cycle?

Your DAT is good enough and your your post-bac record is impressive enough for some schools to potentially consider you. The decision is ultimately yours to make, but from talking to some dental students, it seems that applying to private institutions would be a good idea, and schools that especially prefer high GPAs, post-bacs and dental assistants. NYU and Tufts are two that I can think of off the top of my head. NYU seems to take quite a lot of low GPA but high GPA students. Boston U is also probably a good idea.

If you have the money to take a chance and apply to 8-10 schools , I think you will get at the very least 1 interview. This is probably around $2000 or so total, including flying to an interview or two. Even if you are waitlisted and don't get in until May, you may still have a chance to matriculate in 2013. Whereas if you apply in 2013, you won't matriculate til 2014. You have some weighing to do for yourself.

If you submit AADSAS, everything will be completed by mid September probably. Not a high chance but there is a chance. It's up to you if you want to take this risk or not. Many schools really look for upward trends like yours. Don't sell yourself too short.

I know someone with similar stats who interviewed with Columbia and temple, he got into one of them and attending this fall...its worth a shot, good luck

Based on numbers only, I think you would do fine in dental school. I'd have no competency issues with you. So I'd accept you if admissions were just a numbers game. If I were on Columbia's admission committee that is...

Historically, Columbia has loved high DAT's and has given much forgiveness for lower GPAs. But you more than made up for it in your postbacc.

Kittysquared - thanks for the input. Yeah in the end I'll be deciding but just wanted to know how are my chances at this point. 50/50 seems reasonable for even a interview
Tunaman - wow knowing that puts me some hope.
Stacker - thanks for the words of encouragement... Even at this point I was doubting if all this were going to pay off because it seemed unrepairable.

I'll apply ASAP this cycle and keep improving my stats. Thanks everyone

My gut says apply this cycle, you have a really good DAT and your post-bac GPA is stellar! Best of luck! Do you have a state school?

I think you should apply this cycle. Your strong DAT score and your solid postbacc gpa helps you a lot. I would add a few more schools, though. Some schools I suggest adding to your list: Midwestern-AZ, Temple, and Tufts. While I realize it appears I could be somewhat biased, I believe you should give it a shot at Tufts. Your gpa is below the gpa average for these, but, again, your DAT score is strong enough that it might offset that. Here are the average admission statistics from this past cycle:

Best of luck.👍

MsMouth - I'm from cali so non of the schools are really easy to get in 🙁
OmnipoDent - Thanks for the info. I'll add the schools you mentioned.

I know this is a year old but can i ask which post bacc you did OP?

No bueno. Reapplying first batch this cycle. Applied too late + bad stats.

way to kill the post-bac! That DAT score is solid too! Add Tufts to your list!

Thank you bambam92. I'm applying to all the school lists mentioned above post 😀

I just saw that you are retaking the DAT...why? Your DAT scores are amazing and should still be valid.

Jean Grey. I would need to retake DAT only in the case I don't get in this year( which I really hope not). Since my DAT scores will expire at some schools (2year) and if I reapply again, it would limit the number of schools I could apply.

Oh you mean if you don't get in during the 2013-2014 cycle? Because if you took it last August, they're still good...right?

I hope you have a good story that goes with that transition in your GPA. Make sure you talk about it in your PS.

As for your chances, this is a tough one...I'd apply to about 15 schools if I were you.

Yeah you are right.... Finals+stress about new cycle is giving me a bit of trip... :scared:

I understand. Not sure how I'm going to write the "good" story. It's pretty much I changed from one day to another the way I study.....
And I have about 20 schools on the list to apply 😀

Did you end up writing a PS to reflect your upward trend?
I'm in a similar boat.. except I began focusing on school after slacking off like none other at a CC, then got on high gear at a university.

I got about 90cr at CC at 2.89, and I have a 3.8 at the university...

My professor told me not to mention it in the PS, because I can look "weak"? and told me to discuss my strong points, but I dunno...

Your GPA at uni is higher than at CC so I think you are fine there.
