Another da** "is this a bcpm class" thread

Hate that I'm making a new thread just to get this answered but don't see it happening otherwise. This one kinda throws me for a loop:

Neurobiology M169 -- History of Neurosciences
"Development of neurosciences, especially neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, from Enlightenment era through latter 20th Century. Emphasis on fundamental nerve functions, cell communication, and technological, conceptual and cultural differences that have shaped understanding of brain and nervous system"

Someone I know who took it last year told me take it anyway and even if its not a genuine BCPM to say it is anyway, owing to the fact that it our school's transcript lists it as NEUROBIO M169 HIST-NEUROSCIENCES (he holds that HIST could pass as histology to an AMCAAS checker).

If its BCPM I'll stay, if it's not, I need more BCPM classes so I need to drop and ASAP.

Thanks friends!

Definitely not BCPM to me, but ask the AMCAS people and see...

Perhaps your school's pre-med advisor can also help.

Put it down as BCPM - they decide anyway - no crime, no penalty in trying. Chances are they will let it pass given the course title.

To be clear - this is in NO way BCPM. To classify it as such would fall under the category of 'lie'. That being said, as the people above mentioned, there is absolutely no risk in trying to pass it as BCPM. They worst thing they will do is just change it to the appropriate classification.

Honestly, your reasoning on being able to pass it as BCPM seems totally feasible, in that it would work. I personally would question a histology class in a 100s series, but I am not an AMCAS reviewer. I'm sure that if I was an AMCAS reviewer I would drink and cry every night.

So in conclusion. I believe that this would work. The only question is this - would all of the great work you would do as a doctor cancel out this small but blatant lie that will help you become a doctor? Do the ends justify the means? I don't know, I didn't take ethics because I didn't waste my time on non BCPM courses! Har har!

Good luck.

Drop it. If it has no history in the name and under biology department you might be able to get away with it. I think amcas transcript verifier is smart enough not to accept this as bcpm.

no, its not a BCPM course.

So you're basically asking us for permission to lie to AMCAS?

No I'm asking whether or not it is in fact BCPM. You guys (and what I initially thought) is that it's not. Saw pre-med advisor today. She says it is (she says because of 1. the department --which we know is crap because amcas requires self-categorization and 2. half the material covered is pure electrophysiology)

Your logic stinks. What are you gonna do if we tell you that it's not BCPM? Drop this course and sign up for a different class that is a month into the semester already? Not likely.

I'm on the quarter system. Today is day 2 of week 1 of classes. Aight bro?

If you have to ask, you already know. Just saying.

I don't think you'll get a guarantee that this course will count as BCPM. It is quite possible (probable, in fact) that if you label this as a "Biology" course, the AMCAS reviewer will glance at it and move on. However, it is also possible that they will notice it is a history class and reclassify it. At that point, good luck convincing them otherwise.

I was a neuro major and took an English class in the Neuro department (Advanced Writing for Neuroscience Majors). It showed up on my transcript in the Neuro department but I classified it as English and my reviewer didn't change it.

In short, no one can guarantee that it will classified a certain way. If you for sure want to boost your BCPM GPA, it might be safer to take a real BCPM course.

BCPM or not, I'd take that class. Sounds interesting as hell.

Only if you're interested in the Histology... I mean History of Neuroscience 🙄

LOL. I love how SDN has 2 groups of people: those looking for the lolz and those that take everything incredibly seriously. I appreciate the inputs from both ends I suppose.

Update: Staying in the class..if anyone cares enough (doubtful) about this, at the end of the term I'll update if this class ended up being a true BCPM or not, and I'll classify it that way come application time. Also added another true BCPM class just to be safe. Woooo so much for a semi-life this quarter. Cheers mates.

Next time I might as well start a MD/DO hate thread if I want to take so much heat

I've got 5 bucks on the affirmative. Keep me updated. 😉

The question really is are you fine with doing things with integrity? Or are you fine with doing everything you can get away with? Because the AMCAS rules are pretty clear and the fact that you have to ask indicates that you know this is questionable at best.

As someone who subscribed to the AMCAS questions thread because it was the best way to see the new questions being asked, this made me sad.

Some departments almost always count, I think this class is BCPM. My friend had an internship teaching kids biology but it counted, I'm guessing only because it was in the Biology department. Plus it leads off listing neurobio topics, I'm sure there is a decent amount of science here. Methinks you're good.

The lulz is only acceptable if there was a sufficient amount of feedback provided already..
You can't do it for the lulz on the first post unless troll is obvious.

I never denied that it's questionable. Even now that I decided to stay and roll the dice by keeping it, I don't know. Whatever it ends up being I'm going to report it honestly and that's that. My rationale was that I'd rather avoid taking a non-bcpm than taking one and realizing halfway through it's not (sidenote: pickin's were pretty slim this term. Yay UC budget deficits!). I ended up grabbing an extra guaranteed bcpm (upper div phy sci) and still keeping this just in case this one turns out not to be. So yea, that's gonna be my cost of rolling the dice with integrity--a pretty heavya** term. Worst case scenario, I get one bcpm and one non-bcpm on my app when I find out.

Thanks to all for the input. Don't care if it was to criticize or to offer your take, I wouldn't bother posting on this forum if I wasn't open to both. I'm off to start burning the midnight oil on a funzies quarter. Cheers mates.
