I too am struggling with diversity questions. My current topic revolves around time spent with people who have special needs. I have two older cousins with down syndrome and over the last 6 months have been a Personal Care Assistant for a few people with pretty severe developmental disorders. The focus is on how it has affected me. I've had to adapt to the pace they do things at and working closely with them has helped me empathize much better with people in general.

I considered my parent's divorce but I think that fits better as a challenge essay. So far I haven't come up with anything else.

This would be good, in my opinion. Certainly a lot better than what many other SDNers are trying to pass as "diverse" lately.

We should have a secondary thread sticky, maybe write up a guide together. There's enough essay overlap (diversity, adversity etc.) to help each other out with do's and don'ts.

Your early exposure to peoples with disabilities put you in a unique situation to approach the care of these individuals with a degree of humility and respect that is not common. By making your perspective actionable, you demonstrate a real interest in interacting with this group and I would see this story as a positive statement about the diversity of your experience.

Run with this.

I was thinking it would be good to just have one big "diversity secondaries" thread where everybody could post their questions and ideas, rather than having 5 zillion individual threads for each person.

Thanks all! I appreciate the reassurance and peace of mind.
