If she wants to be close to her Mom and it's something serious, then the best option would be to defer for a year. Transferring wouldn't happen to an MD school and still unlikely to a DO one.

Yeah, this thing about "depressed mom" sounds like total BS to try to get into an MD school by a back channel. The fact is that the mom has been depressed for a while and on top of that you're saying she's willing to graduate from DO school (i.e. finishing 4-year education) and then going to an MD school as a 3rd year. Anyone with half a brain will see through this obvious scam. If she doesn't want a DO degree, she should drop out and go to the Caribbean to get an MD.
