So my plan for next semester was to take two english courses that added up to 6 credits (3 each). I thought this would fulfill most school's requirements if it ever became and issue but I e-mailed one just to be sure and they said they required a full year.

What's the difference between taking both classes in the same semester versus taking them separately over a year? Maybe the person didn't understand my question but now I'm confused.

Even though it's outdated I've been looking at this list here:
http://www.haverford.edu/deans/prehealth/documents/english_requirements.pdf

It seems the only schools I'm interested in that this may be a conflict with are the NY schools which take up a quarter of my list.

They CAN be taken in the same semester, but they have to be a sequence. Like this:

English Composition I + English Composition II
OR
Literature of the World I + Literature of the World II

Do you see what I am saying?

Uh... Really? Anyone else think so? I definitely did not do a sequence...

I thought they mentioned only taking english courses? I haven't seen any mention of specifically taking sequence type courses.

E.g. Modern american literature and fictional literature

I don't think it has to be a sequence - do English departments even do sequences, generally?

In any case, I've always thought of it as ONE year = two semesters (with one class each), so if you take two classes in one semester it will be considered on your transcript as one year.

When you e-mailed the school, did you describe your plan?

Yeah I sent them this:

On your website you mention that a year is needed by the time of matriculation. Next semester I plan on taking a total of 6 credits of English which would normally be equal to a year's worth of English at other schools. Would this qualify for completing the requirement?

And I got this:

"It must be one full year of English..."

Well when I called three MD schools that is what they said. Two were in the west and one in the southeast. Either way you should be fine then.

I'm an English major and there is really nothing in our English department that you have to take in series. Pretty sure 6 cr = 1 year so you should be fine.

I was also an English major and I'm pretty sure we didn't have any series courses at my school either. Just take 2 English classes and you should be fine!

It doesn't have to be a sequence at all. By "year," they mean credit-wise, so 6 credits will fulfill it. Mine was fulfilled by a composition course freshman year and a poetry course during study abroad after sophomore year.
