Hey All!

I've combed through several posts attempting to cobble together information pertinent to my situation...a few hours later, I decided to bite the bullet and ask for your input on my DAT scores, GPA, etc. with regards to

whether I stand a chance of getting into dental school...
which schools if any I should apply to...
and if I should retake the DAT.

I took the DAT today. The only studying I did was to look over PAT questions so that I wouldn't waste time during the exam trying to figure out what to do.

Scores:
PAT 20
QR 22
RC 23
Bio 15
GC 22
OC 17
TS 17
AA 20

I am in my second year of a Chemistry Master's program at a Tennessee school (ETSU), Physical Chem. concentration, research intensive. ( I know, my scores seem pretty crappy considering this) Thesis topic is on an unstudied mechanism for in vitro oxidation of the DNA sugar moiety. A possibility of publications in the future. Current grad GPA (all chem courses) is 3.92. I have a grant through the NSF, called GK-12, which requires me to take a full load of courses, conduct research, and plan/organize/teach 2nd grade science and math lessons for an underprivileged city school weekly. Needless to say I'm both a really busy and broke grad student.

Prior to grad school I worked in a R&D lab for a company called Nuclear Fuel Services. I was in charge of a couple of reasearch projects. This meant that I had to design and implement testing on various nuclear fuels for future production. My undergrad degree was in chem with a GPA of 3.25ish (can't remember) from the honors college. I never took any biology past bio 2 in undergrad. My grad research is more biochem and covers the intricacies of DNA. Of further note is the fact that I haven't taken or looked over biology or specific Ochem reactions in 10 years (sophmore year of undergrad), hence the poor scores. (No one really needs to remember each one those reactions anyway, 🙂 )

My main question:

Do you see the need for me to retake the DAT? I can take another by mid June in time for applications. On the other hand, I don't have time to study or the money to register, so is it really really necessary? (everybody on here seems to have great scores, I guess I want to know if these scores are competetive given the extent of my other activities)

Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any input and any help you may give me!

2 things I noticed.
First off, your TS being a 17 is a major flag.
Second, did any of your research get published.

Everything else is really impressive though.

@Impulse 155:

Thanks for the reply!!

Not published yet, but it is a priority after I finish the research.

Is the TS (Bio and OC too) low enough to stop me from getting any interviews?

Yes. Definitely retake. The 15 and two 17's are major red flags.

The rc and qr gc pat are nice but bio 15 and oc 17? No good. Def retake. Sucks because those other scores are sick and might drop. But if u raise bio and oc and keep gc the same it might be worth it

You say you are getting your masters at ETSU so are you a resident of Tennessee? If so then with a 20AA on the dat you stand a good chance with getting into UT dental school. Especially with a masters and a 3.9 gpa in it. It is ultimately up to you but a 20 AA and 20 PAT is good. You might want to talk with an admissions adviser at your top school before retaking. No use retaking if you don't need to...
