hi y'all

my only suit is pretty lightweight, and my upcoming interview is in chicago in january. do you think it would be acceptable for me to wear black flats, black dress pants, a nice black turtleneck, and a black-and-cream twill jacket? or should i stick with a more traditional suit? (i am female.)

I think that sounds fine. Very professional!

I don't know. Can you post a picture of the jacket? If it looks really nice, then wear it. However, the black turtle neck might be a bit too much. Do you have any really warm sweaters that have a round or v-neck?

Oh, and why can't you wear a jacket to the interview and then take it off in the Admissions Office? They usually have a place to store luggage/jackets? That way you won't freeze.

Although, after going on a bunch of interviews and seeing people wear a variety of outfits, I think looking tradition is not as important as we think it is. But who knows. As long as you have the attitude to pull off the outfit, then you should be ok 🙂

here it is (i hope!). the red flower thingee is not part of the jacket.

The only important thing is that you look great. Who cares if you freeze or not. It's not relevant here.

It's a nice jacket (but I wish you could take the red flower off of it) 🙂 I wouldn't wear a black turtle neck with it though. Try a sweater or a shirt without a neck. It will look better.

Good luck :luck: You will look great!

At each of my interviews, we really all looked like a big black-suited amoeba swarming through the hallways. It was refreshing to see someone wearing something a little different once in a while! As long as you look professional, it will work!

I think that would be fine. Try it on with a variety of tops, though. I'm thinking a standard white button-down might be the best. Or, if you're a color person, consider a red shell - the red/black/white combo looks very sharp. A black shell would be safe.

I think it's okay,
but this is the thing, yes Chicago is cold, but you're mainly inside all day, so if you have a pea coat, just wear that and bring some gloves to wear over your suit when you're outside touring and such. Be careful with wearing pants in the snow, especially if there is salt on the road, it will ruin pant bottoms.

If it were me, I'd wear a skirt suit and wear a long pea coat with matching gloves

i have no pea coat--only a puffy jacket that won't go on over a suit jacket. if i move to a cold place, i will buy a nice coat, but money is tight now and i don't generally need it where i live now. skirts don't work too well for me generally. so i'm all about having a warmish pant suit and gloves...

thanks for the advice all!
