I know that people might be sick of the letter of intent issue, but I think that we all want to get into the best school possible, and some schools will be more likely to accept you if you write a letter of intent. That being said, my question is this: I want to write a letter of intent to school X BEFORE a decision is made on my file. Basically, I want to know what happens if I am put on the waitlist. It seems to be the consensus from other threads that I am not obligated to go there because they didn't accept me. In this case, can I write another letter of intent to a school that might be more likely to accept me off the waitlist? I am not a fan of writing more than one letter, but if the first one is void, then it should be OK. Thanks for your opinions.

The idea behind a letter of intent, is that "If you let me in I will send you a check and buy an apt and go there the next day"

Now since you are waitlisted at a school that you sent a letter of intent, I believe it would be ok to send another to this other school provided that which ever one lets you in first regardless of if the other also does you would go to that first school. Thus it is ok, if you get an acceptance though, you should immedietly withdraw all your applications to your other waitlisted schools and go there.

However there is another issue, given that you send two letters of intent. If the school's do talk to each other it could require some explaining if your lucky, or if your not lucky they won't talk to you and just get pissed and reject you. Thus while it is ethical and moral to send the two letters I would just send a strong letter of interest being honest with them stating that you really want to go there and provided they let you in you will attend.

It seems to me that a letter of intent pre-acceptance would not obligate you if you are placed on the waitlist. You can always write another letter if you are waitlisted.

Good Luck, I hope it works....

I agree, letter of intent should read: "I intend to enroll should you choose to accept me" so you're obviously off the hook if they don't choose to accept you. Its not like you're saying, "I intend to withdraw from all other schools so that you can jerk me around as much as you want to get a kick out of it."
